Not sure I can say that with so many performances being incredible, but his lines have become incredibly iconic. His speeches in both Two Towers and Return of the King (can't remember the names of the specific battles, sorry) along with his line about "What can men do against such reckless hate?" definitely puts him in the top echelon of performances.

I wonder if Bernard recorded any dialogue for the animated LOTR film that comes out in December. Mirando Otto (played Eowyn in the LOTR trilogy) is in the film so it wouldn't be surprising if Theoden is as well.

I... am aware. he also can't stay in an accent to save his life and has some pretty bad line deliveries across the trilogy lol. definitely a great performance more on the physical side of things. polar opposite of Bernard who sells the hell out of every single line and perfectly embodies the weary, ageing king

his speech before Helms Deep is actually single handedly what made his performance my favourite. "where is the horse and the rider? where is the horn that is blown?"... man. it's one of the best scenes in any movie

I think the best overall performance is far and away Sean Astin, but yeah, Bernard Hill is definitely a standout in an entire trilogy of standouts.

  10. Theoden is the best performance of the non-main roles that aren’t in all three films, that’s for sure

Sean Astin is my favorite performance for sure, but Ian, Andy, and Bernard were all good too.

Brad Dourif of course absolutely freaks it in his like 20 minutes of screentime too

Damn, RIP. Always loved his LOTR performance. His captain goes down with the ship scene in Titanic always sticks out to me. He manages to portray such a perfect blend of fear and acceptance in that moment.

Ride of The Rohirrim is an all-time movie scene for me. The stakes, the music, cinematography...and then Bernard Hill being perfect. I watch it multiple times a year.

I've been planning on doing an LOTR rewatch for some time now, desperate to revisit it.

YEah the build up, the realization on their faces as they see what's in front of them, his speech, and then that violin kicking in as the charge begins. Legit one of the best scenes in cinema history

I realized a few years ago that on The Hobbit movies every single creative decision that was made went the wrong way for me and my enjoyment of the films.

The only exception to this is casting.
