The Harfoots were some of my favorite parts, which isn’t sayin much (the dwarves too). Almost all the other characters in the other storylines seemed stale and uninteresting

Elves coming to steal jobs may be the worst bit of dialogue in the entire show, and there is a bit.

Elrond and Durin stole the show for me. Khazad-dum was astounding.

Did the show ever use text for locations before the Mordor moment? No, right? It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't out of place. Yeah, cool stylistically, but only if the text wasn't such an isolated event.

Edit: I went back to the first episode. I remember some titles there and shots of maps between scenes. But after that, no other titles. When they arrived in Numenor, no title.

Disdain and mistrust of the elves is a major part of Numenor’s downfall, which helps lead to the rise of Sauron and basically all of the events relating to Men in LOTR. One of the most poignant stories in Tolkien’s work, to me. Might be clumsily done, but it didn’t register with me as odd when I saw its depiction here.

Doesnt Galadriel just say it out loud then?

Yeah. My point was if they had made it a recurring thing to have text when a new location is introduced, then the Mordor thing would have made sense.

Okay some of us do need to be spoon fed the text because we're dumb and that some of us is me

I interviewed Tyroe Muhafidin, the actor who plays Theo, today - he’s Australian and releasing his debut single on Friday - and he was preparing for a night shoot of something that he couldn’t say anything about :)

I thought the Balrog one was pretty good. At least, if you know what happens. Then again the Balrog always really creeped me out.

Overall I thought this season was decent. Episodes 1, 6, and 8 being the standouts. Hopefully Season 2 has a bit more action and less Numenor. I'd give season 1 an 8/10

honestly i feel like they got the idea for the text thing from game of thrones opening sequence and i think its lame

but it doesnt matter that much to me

I'm sure no one in here will, and I don't know why I did (except I'm a glutton for punishment), but the critical drinkers take on this is so bad. He's such a toxic manbaby and I hate that his following is so huge. And some of the criticisms are just laughable when he complains about things like tiresome tropes but then also complains it moves away from source material. Which is it buddy?

Also if LOTR came out today, and was the exact same movie, people would find reasons to hate it, I guarantee it. I really wish I could stay off of the internet more and just enjoy stuff as any adaptation now comes with 'I'm going to hate this and I'm going to bend over backwards to make sure it's known'.

i still want someone to explain how RoP is “woke” at all except to say “they cast black actors”

That's all it is. I guess to add on to that, they complain that the villages are so remote that they wouldn't have mixed races, so it's woke as it doesn't make sense within the story.

It's also the whole argument that no real 'strong female characters' exist and all Hollywood is doing is making the men incompetent and weak (Where are the alpha men!!?!?! Stop making them beta's!!) that sort of shrill nonsense.

If there's any one major lesson to take away from the entire LotR franchise, I'm pretty sure it's being an "alpha male" is bullshit

It’s hilarious also sad that these “fans” of popular media(The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, GoT, RoP etc) always entirely miss the point lol.

And yeah Galadriel is one of my favorite characters in tv this year. I loved the actress in St. Maude but she did a fantastic job here as well

The greatest hero in all of Tolkien is noted opposite-of-alpha male Samwise Gamgee. It’s not like Tolkien was subtle about the toxicity of pride and dominance!

The only character I think could be considered the “alpha male” stereotype would be Boromir, but his character was also a very faulty individual. Though, he did redeem himself before his death.

Can I just say I really appreciate how Theo fessed up to having the sword hilt thing? I kinda expected them to have him hide it for longer and get all connected to it and be angsty for a while or something and I was prepared to hate him lol but when he fessed up to having it I def liked him a lot more
