I can’t watch until tomorrow (attended the Vols football game tonight) and it’s killing me a little bit.

Just finished the first episode. I liked it more than I was anticipating I would. Great cinematography. Galadriel is awesome. Visually it’s matching the standard that the LOTR trilogy set which is a good feat to accomplish. I’ll check out episode two tomorrow.

Man that first 10 minutes of episode one went so hard. On episode 2 now and I’m very much in.

  6. Had a huge smile on my face with this. Similar to the new Star Trek, just a big “oh they’re doing the thing” feeling. The biggest LOTR fan in the house is also loving it so far.

  8. First two eps were awesome, and the show looks stellar. Actors for Galadriel and Prince Durin are great. They're introducing a lot to set up the characters and world, but I didn't find it too hard to follow.

Enjoyed the second episode as well. The scene with the orc felt like it was taken from a horror movie

I don't know shit about Tolkien lore or anything but I'm into this, story-wise its been mostly set up and worldbuilding so it can feel a bit slow at times but I love when shows/movies take the extra time for that stuff. Production value and visuals have been top tier for me too. Excited to see where it goes.

As a huge fan of Tolkien, and someone who loves Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies (and pretty much pretends his Hobbit ones don't exist), I was honestly feeling pretty lukewarm about this over the last several years reading about its development. For every cool, positive thing I would read or see, it felt like there were a couple really negative red flags. I knew I would probably end up watching it, and I actively tried to remain positive about it, but I honestly felt zero excitement or anticipation about it whatsoever.

I was glad it wasn't Netflix, but Amazon / Jeff Bezos are awful, and Prime has a pretty lackluster record with shows too, and I think they really hamstrung their Wheel of Time adaptation, mainly in not really having faith in it or supporting it. The fact that they guaranteed 5 seasons and ponied up a trillion dollars right up front for this was reassuring, and made it seem like, at the very least, they aren't likely to pull the plug on this one too soon. I couldn't really wrap my head around what the show was going to be *about* aside from just a somewhat vague setting within a certain era / timeframe in Tolkien's imagined history.

I've only watched one episode so far, but that one episode was absolutely spectacular. This show looks amazing across the board, and there were a handful of shots that were honestly pretty breathtaking. Two moments that really jump to mind for me are when they first hard cut to Middle-Earth and the battle and the eagle tosses some other flying beast to the ground over the soldiers battling on the ground and the flames, and when they show Sauron in his armor with all of the orcs gathering / groveling in front of him.

My biggest gripe with The Wheel of Time on Prime was that it felt like they were rushing through the story at a breakneck pace, just absolutely blasting past plot points at an insane speed, so its really nice to see them taking their time a little bit here to properly set this story up.

  14. I loved both episodes. I was kinda shocked that it seems like most people elsewhere thought this was awful.

I was very into it. So was my wife who usually doesn’t care for fantasy stuff.

I have zero idea what is going on in this but it looks amazing. Going to need a solid podcast to get me up to speed on what is all going on here.

I'm really glad there's some positivity in this thread. So much of the hate I've seen seems to come from people who have made up their mind to hate this show before even watching it.

Yeah, I stayed up WAY too late finishing the first episode. I was gonna just check it out, but I ended up watching the whole first episode.

  19. For anyone looking for a recap podcast for this, I like David Chen's Decoding TV. He's going to be recapping this show with Don Marshall, who is apparently a LOTR expert. He's also really good about not spoiling future episodes in his recaps, which I like.

This is just a short podcast they did in prep for the show. Not exactly sure when the recaps drop, but I assume a day or two at most after the eps air.

The CG, cinematography, production design, costume design were all top notch. This looks incredible. A few parts where some of more lighthearted scenes and attempts at humor came off as incredibly corny, but i also felt that about all six movies too. Markella Kavenaugh just shines on screen in this role, she killed it.

Gandalf coming to Middle Earth this early in the timeline would contradict Tolkien canon, plus it just seems too obvious.

biggest theory from Tolkien fans online i'm seeing is that he is one of the two Blue Wizards, were are the only two out of the five Istari who came to Middle Early that Tolkien did not go into much detail on at all. But still the idea one of the Istari at all is a little sus, since they none of them were ordered to come to middle earth until the 1000th year of the Third Age.
