Eggers said that was one of the non-technical shots (stuff like the cabin getting destroyed by waves, etc) that he worked really hard to get in as few takes as possible because Dafoe was laying in ice cold water the whole time.

Any good Youtube interviews with Eggers or the actors where they explain how it was made and all that?

Yeah, but I’m saying that mostly out of hope for Dafoe in that very stressful situation. Imagine having to nearly swallow dirt over and over again if he were to fuck up his lines or delivery haha

that Eggers AMA has some good stuff in it. Here's a painting by Sascha Schneider he admits he "stole" from for the movie

So there's at least this and pantings of Prometheus he borrowed from, I'm curious what else.

Fuck. This movie is so good

Absolute bananas. The forced change in speech was fascinating.

I've thought about this almost non stop since I saw it Thursday. Definitely my favorite of the year so far. Dying to see it again, there's just so much out I need to see right now. The struggle is real.

For those that really like this film, overall what are the main things that really stand out to you about this film? What does it do well that other films don't? Whenever I come across a piece of art that I'm not a fan of, but I find people who feel the absolute opposite of me, I'm always fascinated by that; how art can make one person feel a certain way, and another person a completely different way. And that's me with this film; I left it thinking "Mehhhhh", but just find it so interesting how people here seem enamored with the film, which I think is awesome to see. I've had this thought idea a million times with music, like I assume most people on Chorus have, so I found this film to be a great case/example to talk about this

What I personally love most about it is the ambiguity (but not too ambiguous as to render it meaningless!) of the entire thing that leaves open so many possible interpretations that are just as legitimate as another. Art that can be "properly" interpreted (i.e., there are no massive holes in the theory that undermine it) under various differing lenses is what I typically think of as the greatest "height" a piece of art can achieve thematically

I really enjoyed Midsommar, more than Hereditary even, but this is so much tighter in every way

The sound design in the last minute or so, you know if you’ve seen it, was so fucking great

Dafoe was god damn legendary in this. And the lighting on his face in some of his monologues was so perfect. Felt so classic

This was impeccably made and acted and compulsively watchable, but...I'm not entirely sure what the point was, I guess?
