Does Pattinson kill the gull/see all the spooky shit before or after he gets dropped while painting the Lighthouse?

I need to watch this again.

If I’m not mistaken, he has his first vision of the mermaid before he kills the gull/falls.

But yeah, I would really like to go see this again, but my area rarely gets movies like this and when we do they don’t always stick around long. Might have to wait until digital/home release before I see it again *sigh*

Good. Someone at a party last night made a pretty compelling argument that The Lighthouse is purgatory but I honestly HATE that idea as it seems to be a pretty overused and easy theory and I prefer to believe it was a real, physical place. But I had forgot about Pattinson's fall and was worried all the real trippy stuff happened after it. (I now remember the Gull killing was after, as the bird he killed was the one eyed gull that woke him up ripping up his pant leg)

This is fucking incredible and also the funniest movie of 2019??? I could have watched the two of them just insult each other for two hours and been perfectly happy.

the quick shot where the lightbeams are coming out of Dafoe's eyes during Pattinson's hallucination (breakdown? dream?) was terrifying and probably the best shot of the year. Except for maybe the last shot, which is also stunning.

honestly this sounds amazing haha. as beautiful as this was shot and looked, I really felt like I needed that 35mm flicker. wouldn't even mind if they just did it in post for the digital. surprised I haven't seen any 35mm screenings for it.

glad to see more Lynch comparisons here. my friend said it felt like David Lynch and Kubrick's The Shining had a baby, felt that was pretty on point.

For those who really like this film, have you seen The Witch, and if so what did you think of it? And compared to The Lighthouse?

It threw me off so hard with how short that made Dafoe seem.

Love both. Lighthouse is definitely the weirder of the two.

I like both. Outside of the theme of isolated people going mad and Eggers' visual mastery and sense of place, I don't know if I would compare them that much. I think they're trying to do different things. The Witch skews much closer to horror while idk if The Lighthouse wants to be that (though there are obviously some startling/disturbing moments). It's more interested in the psychological side of things and how much truth there might have been in old myths. I think I like The Lighthouse slightly more but both are stellar.

This was goddamn amazing. Both actors put on a performance, especially Dafoe with those insane monologues.

Also I believe Eggers said The Witch took itself too seriously so he wanted to add more humor to this one

I think my favorite part was when Pattinson finds the head in the crab basket. Then the music cranks, and cuts to shot of them both violently chugging the booze.

Can't stop thinking about Pattinson using that bird's neck like a whip and smashing it for like a full minute

Yeah at first it was like ok I get it and then it went on for so long and became deeply upsetting

Natured called during that scene so I missed it, but maybe that’s for the better.

The shot of William Dafoe's face getting covered in dirt while he was still speaking, and the dirt going into his mouth each time, was insane
