A friend posted this ad on Facebook and the thought occurred to me at the time "so are they trying to say that if the trans woman chose to walk away, which she has every single right to do and is a decision she would be totally justified in, then she made the wrong choice?"

 

I keep seeing people on Facebook posting articles saying this is the antidote we need after that Pepsi commercial and I'm like dude this is even worse because it's putting bigotry on equal footing as feminism. The last thing we need is to legitimize the views of the far right. It's like saying "I respect your right to have a different opinion" without saying "unless your opinion is that I should die." One article I read against it said, among other things, "Where's the example of racism?"

And beer is gross. Like, I'm not even talking about Heineken, just... beer in general.

My intuition is that "transgender" and "transracial" are analogous, but I haven't formed a strong opinion. I'm unfamiliar with the relevant literature and have only just started to get up to speed.

 

as far as gender and race theory as we know them, they're pretty different. gender is not inherited in the way race is (gender is not dependent on that of the parents, while race is), so its generational connection, and as a result, the long-term ramifications of discrimination, are felt differently.
further, there's a totally different layout of gender psychology that is nontransferable to (the nonexistent) "racial psychology," or what have you, ie the underpinning of gender identity that's fundamentally missing from racial identity as we understand it and the brain now.
lastly, anecdotally, the experiences of "transracial" folks typically reflect selective behavior, picking up their cornrows and tanning lotion as is politically and socially convenient rather than living and presenting race in a consistent, meaningful way. transgender folks, who do have to weigh the safety of when to present as their designated sex vs gender identity, take on a risk of presentation, while transracial people take it on as a preference. they're not disproportionately targeted for violence, subject to draconian bathroom laws, etc; instead, they reflect the systemic co-opting of black (or other people of color) culture for white adaptation which historically was for commodification.

Well it's time to file for a name change whether I can afford it or not. Boss just told me I need a passport. Don't have one, and not getting one with my old name on it.

The discussion about reactions on social media, interpersonal conflict, and de escalation of that, is important and personal. Especially when it discusses being angry at your own friends and other people, instead of the institutions. I can relate to that. It's really hard to take a step back about politics when you're constantly frustrated and so much affects you and your identity.
