I’m leaning toward game format again. S2: Ellie, S3: Abby, S4: Farm/Santa Barbara

 

I've been a firm believer if this since the beginning.

 

I still say no way. It works in the game because there’s no delay between Ellie and Abby’s story, it was all there for the player to do at their own pace. You force viewers to wait two years to find out what happened in the theater as opposed to 12 hours of gameplay, people will complain a lot more than they already did for the game.

 

Eh, people will complain about anything and everything, and TV is no stranger to big cliffhangers between seasons with long gaps (see Severance, GOT, BB, etc).

I think not doing separate seasons for Ellie and Abby would be a disservice to the story and its themes, as well as Abby the character. It's going to be hard to win over anyone to her side, or at least show her humanity, if we go straight from Joel's murder to an intermingled story of Abby and Ellie, a character we already care for.

 

I finally played through this game for the first time. Unfortunately I did go into it knowing some major spoilers (I knew Abby kills Joel and I knew the doctor Joel killed was Abby's father) but I really enjoyed the game just as much as the first one, if not more. Very excited to see how they adapt it for the series.

I haven't read a whole lot online about opinions and stuff but from pretty early on in the game I had felt sympathetic to Abby, and by the end of the game I definitely leaned on her side over Ellie, which as I understand it is not a very popular view lol

 

They only have a couple more weeks of filming so seems like they may be ending the season in the theater like the first part of the game.

We got our first shot of Abby!! I’m gonna eat my words and it seems they are doing the same split. I can’t imagine Bella won’t be in the next season at all though.

 

Ye of little faith. I figured it would be the same. Yeahhh we'll have to wait another 2ish years for the next season but I feel TV viewers will feel the same way I felt. Spent the entire first half absolutely hating Abby, as show watchers will do and once the show comes back everyone's bewildered. I have faith in them keeping viewers not only intrigued but satisfied once it returns and it's now S3: Abby PoV. It'll be compelling enough with the switch to keep people's interest. I honestly don't think we'll see Bella until the very end at the theater.

 

It just doesn’t seem conducive as a TV viewing experience for a standard audience, especially with the time there will be between seasons. It absolutely work as a game though. We’ll see how it goes soon enough.

 

Well I’ll eat crow lol. Ellie and Jesse scenes, it seems they’re splitting it the same. They already filmed in the Vancouver Aquarium I’m pretty sure. I just don’t think we won’t have Ellie at all until the end of season 3, so it’ll be interested if to see what changes in that regard

 

She'll show up at the very end, once Abby gets to the theater. You're missing the important part, which is that the 2nd part of the game ABBY is the lead. It's her story. It's her journey. The audience will be sucked into her journey, and to see how it coincides with everything we just saw in the previous season.

 

That is not lost on me, but switching to a completely different character that seemingly will sparingly appear in S2 for a whole season after waiting probably almost 2 years for S3 for the next is different than it is for a game, where you can just play all of the way through in a few days if you wanted to.

 

Abby may appear sparingly but she has enough a presence that the casual viewer will NOT forget who she is. Abby killing Joel will not only make the viewer despise her, but at the same time they'll be intrigued to find out WHY and once they find out we're revisiting the same timeframe we just saw Ellie experience, it'll be fine. For example the hospital. Sure we'll see Ellie and her hunting spree but then we'll see it from Abby's group's PoV. The aquarium.

The hook will be ending next season with the cliffhanger of the theater. For the casual viewer they'll want to see Ellie get her revenge, her ultimate goal. Then we start S3 and the viewer gets to experience a totally different yet relevant PoV and experience the events leading up to the theater, all the while they're thinking to themselves "oh shit what's gonna happen and am I really supposed to be Team Ellie now?" And then BAM theater time. I think you're overthinking it. Yes it's a wait but both seasons will end at the same location, so viewers will retain the knowledge and remember exactly what's at stake for both of these characters.

The only reason we have these concerns and worries are that WE are the ones who played the game. Casual viewers, non game players will be fiiiiine.

 

No offense, but I think you’re trying to overexplain it to me. I understand all of that as someone who would say it is probably my favorite game. I still don’t think it works as a story telling device on television show with a large gap between seasons, and especially not one run by David Zaslav, who seemingly overvalued their acquisition of HBO and is trying to cut costs left and right.


I’d love to be proven wrong, though.

 

I also think it’s risky and the only reason I think they might try it is because they can rely on Kaitlyn Dever to carry a season and win over the viewer but idk. I think they’d have to film S3 and S4 back to back because asking an audience to wait like four years to spend time with the character they spent the first two seasons with is a bit tough.

Although it would give Bella a few much needed years to look more than 13 years old for the California arc

 

As much as I say FUCK ZASLAV I hope he realizes this is their critical darling show, and Mazin and Druckmann get free reign. I'm witnessing the cuts HBO is doing to HotD and while I love that show I don't think it's bringing the same acclaim that TLoU has so they might be less inclined to cut corners with that.

....I hope lol.

 

In an IDEAL situation I wish they would have been able to film both Ellie's and Abby's PoV ....so yeah they may have had a longer shooting schedule but they could easily put out S2 and S3 back to back and then take a lil bit more time to release S4.

 

Well now it makes sense why Dever was not seen at all lol. Hopefully no one posts this in the show thread.
