    Agreed. MILD SPOILER

And this is context not really explained in the game either. Whether it comes later in the show or not is another story but yes, there's definitely a story beat missing there that I'd like to see expanded on.

current episode spoiler though it's not adding much that's not already been said
I do love though how they cut where the Riley/Ellie scene ends. I've always found it a great/creative choice to end on their decision to wait it out. Despite a common complaint about how bleak the games and show are, I think it does a nice job of portraying hope and creating bittersweet moments and this was one of them. This is one scene where the game 'acting' drew me in a bit more, but I liked the show version just fine.

We do not need to rank episodes, FFS.

  4. agreed about Bella and Storm's performances here being what makes this episode great, and I cannot fucking wait for what's to come in the next episode.

this movie poster is sort of an easter egg from the game actually—since the game came out in 2013 Twilight was of course hugely popular and would have (theoretically) existed in the game's universe, since it also takes place in 2013. Polygon wrote a little article about it that goes more in-depth (no spoilers beyond episode 7): The Last of Us’ biggest Easter egg is its smallest shot

game discussion: I think your wife is actually mostly right, I don't think Marlene knows about Ellie's immunity until the mall; initially she wants her in FEDRA school because she knows she'll be safer there (at this point she's only protecting her because of a promise to Ellie's mom, not because she knows she's immune).

Thought this was another stellar episode. I really do think it's vital to the story - this is basically Ellie's origin. Of course she had a life before, but as far as we know, it was a pretty safe and uneventful life up until that night. She was just a kid living in a military school. She never knew her parents, never had any real family or even many friends. current episode spoilers: Then she finally has that in Riley, almost loses her, then gets her to agree to stay (although I'm not entirely sure if we're supposed to believe Riley was really going to stay), and then immediately loses her again while knowing that she shouldn't have survived either. That's such an important foundation for why she is growing so attached to Joel.

very vague part 2 spoilers It also explains a LOT about certain choices Ellie will make in future seasons.

    Did we need to? No.

    Did I want to? Yes.

Is it interesting to see which common episodes are striking a chord, and which episodes are divisive or appeal to different types of people? Yes.

Let the thread decide what it needs FFS. If people start ranking, don't be a nelly and let it happen. If it doesn't, I'm certainly not forcing it.

I think it was more of when Riley and Ellie spoke at the mall, and Riley said that Marlene told her Ellie couldn't join, was Marlene already aware of Ellie and the answer from both the game and the episode 1 scene is that yes, she did. She was specifically saying NO to Ellie and not no to Riley recruiting others.

Ranking everything all the time is dumb as hell. It reveals a bunch of posts with numbers. Just stop. Just let discussion happen. You don’t need to steer the thread from discussion to ranking. At least wait until the season is over and maybe some time has passed.

Tried ranking these in order of "If I was a 14 year old who grew up in the apocalypse and never saw a mall before" mindset. Moving shit and lights?! Games to play?! Electric stairs?!

    Yes Sir!
I tongue in cheek knew it'd controversial, but we were talking about if it was the weakest episode or not so I figured let's see if it is or not by consensus, and those that thought it was weak, which episodes did they like (aka - the discussion steered me to ranking, and I thought ranking would lead to more discussion). I know you know how discussion forums work as you have 12k posts here. If no one wants to rank, (or in general, if no one likes the current trend of conversation) it'll get changed pretty quickly, but your holier than thou 'this is dumb! don't do it!' attitude is pretty annoying. If you have the Greg forum conversational rules handy, shoot them my way so I don't run afoul again.

    Discussion question:
To those that haven't played the games, do you watch the next week on and do you feel that they provide a good tease without spoiling anything? I am always amazed at how much they seemingly give away but I know that I am filling in all the context that a non game player wouldn't have.

I kind of hope that they don't do one for the finale but I doubt that's the case.

Anyone listen to this weeks podcast? I'm half way through. I like that this is Neil's episode and he speaks more. Craig is always leading despite it being Neil's creation. It's nice to see him less shy and really speak about his ideas and process.

The only things that really stuck out to me about this episode is the conversations at the beginning between Ellie and Riley felt very “old man screenwriter imagining how teens talk” until it settled when they went to the mall. And I thought the infected look kind of hokey, but they don’t really focus on it too much, so it was fine.

The only truth you need is that ranking is horrendously stupid. Just don’t do it. That’s it.
I would put ranking over taxes.

Apparently the amusement park in the picture of the captain's wife/daughter is Six Flags Great ADventure, and Kingda Ka is in the picture....Continuity error! That ride wasn't open or built yet in 2003!
