Brandon Flowers on KROQ this morning, said the Killers' fifth album is expected to be out by spring/summer.

YESSSSSSS. No one makes rock music like The Killers do anymore. I'm so excited. Is there a video up of the interview?

It's really well done. Only bummer is it's larger than a standard vinyl gatefold, so it jettisons out of my collection.

Yeah it does stick out for sure. It's best to just display it somehow, or put it with other box sets.

Does anyone know anything about the physical Christmas album? I heard it would be released this Friday, but do not see an order/pre-order link anywhere.

Thanks! Just ordered. $19 for a cd but at least $14 of it goes to a good cause.

Some new concrete details (finally) about the album, from an interview with Brandon in Q (March issue). I've transcribed it below. It's short, but really exciting stuff in there.

Q: When Q last saw you at the Sam's Town 10th Anniversary shows in October, you were getting ready to start recording the fifth Killers album. What stage are you at now?
Brandon Flowers: I feel like we're at a good solid halfway mark. We've had a couple breakthroughs which I'm grateful for!

    What's gone on so far?
It's difficult. Everybody lives in different towns and one of the first breakthroughs, aside from the songs, was getting in the right producer and we've chosen the right guy and that's Jacknife Lee. He's Irish and lives in Topanga Canyon in California and he's been a great help.

How did working with him come about?
It was a suggestion by Bono when I was 'round his place in Los Angeles on Father's Day.

Hold on. What were you doing there on Father's Day? Is Bono your dad?
I just let the cat out of the bag! Well, it was some kind of party. I think it was a Father's Day party.

    OK, carry on.
Yeah, so the old man suggested we try Jacknife Lee, so I took him up on it and we ended up getting on really well and it's been cooking ever since.

How much did revisiting Sam's Town affect the record?
I think in that aspect it was integral. It made me remember how cohesive everything was, there's something really together about it. We put out Direct Hits after Battle Born and I feel like that was the end of something, so now it's about re-imagining the Killers as men now. People with life experiences and blood on their hands, seeing what we look like with callouses and lines around our eyes.

Perhaps you need to stop being so boyishly good-looking for that to happen.
Yeah! That might take a while.

Was there one song that led the way on the new album?
There's one song called "Rut" and we're all kind of excited with what was happening with that. Another is called "Run For Cover" and that comes from Day & Age, so it's eight years old. It started with Stuart Price and it still sort of has his stamp on it but we're funneling it back through the band eight years later with a different producer. I never got the lyrics right and I think I'm gonna get it right this time. "Run For Cover" looks like it's got a good shot [at being on the album].

    Where have you been recording?
It's been back and forth between Las Vegas and Topanga Canyon. We've also rented houses in Joshua Tree, we've rented houses in San Diego, we've tried different studios in LA with different producers. We've kind of been all over the place.

What are the new songs sounding like?
There are moments that feel heavier than anything we've ever done, not that we're the heaviest band in the world, but they have a finesse because of our experience. There's also really beautiful things. Lyrically, it's really close to home.

Are there any other songs we should know about?
There's one song called Tyson vs. Douglas [titled after the 1990 boxing match between Mike Tyson and Buster Douglas that saw the then-undefeated Tyson knocked out]. I don't know why but I think about it all the time and I finally tried to tackle it in a song, what it meant to have this hero of mine get torn down, and then everything that happened after that. This guy lived in Las Vegas and he was Iron Mike Tyson and it was so exciting and I watched the joy my mum and dad got out of watching him knock people out. It had some kind of effect on me because I think about it all the time.

What else have you been up to?
My boy Gunnar got the training wheels off his bike. That was a real triumph at home. He was reluctant but he learns fast. There was one incident where his face went into the bumper of my truck, but he was OK. But he got it, so he's walking a little bit taller around the house.

Congratulations Gunnar! Good luck with the rest of the record.
Thanks! I'm really confident about a lot of these songs right now. I just wanna keep the ball rolling.

No clue he named his son Gunnar. I've always loved that name for a boy.

    what a waste of wood

Is Hot Fuss or Sams Town considered their best? I've always really loved this band but I don't actually think I've EVER listened to an album all the way through.

I personally think Sam's Town is by far their best album. It's one of my all-time faves (probably top 20). I'd say Hot Fuss is second and even Sawdust is really good (covers and b-sides from Sam's Town and Hot Fuss). I personally didn't care for Day & Age and I thought Battle Born was really, really bad.
