I missed hearing this. Any other thoughts?? I love me some Wrecking Ball, so I guess that's a good thing for me.

 

I think the lyrics felt a bit awkward at first, but the second listen was much smoother. Obviously lacking the presence of Dave and Mark, but still feels very Killers. I think fans of the Desired Effect will love it.

Also holy shit, Spike Lee directing the music video.

it's nice that they tried but........................ these lyrics are pretty parody level tbh

maybe I'm being too cynical but these are like 3 levels beyond on the nose

 

I feel like i appreciate the intent.. but the finished product I couldn't even get through once. I haven't tried to watch the video yet. Sometimes I wonder how a band that has produced some of my favorite songs of all time can also put out some of the cheesiest lyrics I have ever heard. (I'm not only referring to this song)

Yeah, pretty mediocre tbh. Those lyrics are way too on the nose.

 

I like the message they're sending, and I respect what they were going for with this whole thing. That being said, the song is not very good. It makes me hope they stay the hell away from this type of stuff on LP6 with Ariel Rechtshaid.

I think message songs and political songs are inherently extremely tough to pull off well. To be honest, I usually don't even like them from artists I love 90% of the time.

To me, with lyrics that are this level of straightforward and on the nose, the song needed to be great enough to make up for that fact, like kick so much ass and be so awesome that you don't really care that the lyrics are a little pedestrian because you respect the hell of what they're saying and rocking the F out. This song definitely does not do that for me.

Between this and Frank Turner's song MAGA, I'm batting .000 with artists I like tackling current events. Perhaps Jason Isbell producing Josh Ritter might yield some good stuff in that arena. I did read the album felt political and responsive at least to them when they were making it. Those are two people who have gone there with their music in the past and done it well with songs like "Thin Blue Flame" and "White Man's World".

For my personal taste, "Thin Blue Flame" is how I love a song to tackle that type of stuff, versus say "Girl In The War" from the same album is a little too on the nose for me. Like I said though, political songs really are not my thing at all.

This song feels like a We Are the World parody that cuts off right before the punchline

 

Ahhh yeah. Damn. Case in point right there. I cannot wait to hear that one on the new album. I don't want to shit on Brandon Flowers too much here, because I am a huge fan of his and I think there are a lot of things he does really well, and I respect what he's saying with the song LOTF - but this is the level of writing I'm referring to.

 

I actually prefer when politically motivated songs are more forthright with their message. For me this song creates a cool dichotomy between the very bad things happening in the lyrics and the nostalgic "Springsteen-esque" sound The Killers go for.

 

Maybe it's because I read all the comments in here before listening, but I don't think the track is THAT bad. I would take it over at least 2 tracks on Wonderful, Wonderful.
