The Juliana Theory have returned with the new single “Playback ’99 (Burn the Cassette Deck).”

Today, emo/alternative rock pioneers The Juliana Theory have returned with their new single and video"Playback '99 (Burn the Cassette Deck)", which will appear on their upcoming EP 'Still The Same Kids' Pt.1 available on May 6th from Equal Vision Records. The official video is streaming here now, with the song available on all DSP's 4/1. The new EP features 4 songs that fully embrace the strengths of the band’s catalog of underground anthems without sacrificing an ounce of who the duo is now. Truth be told, The Juliana Theory always owed as much to The Beatles as to Sunny Deal Real Estate, with shades and shimmers of everything from Depeche Mode and Tears For Fears to The Foo Fighters in their arsenal. The first in a series of 3 EP's to be released between now and 2023 on EVR, 'Still The Same Kids' Pt.1 is a successor to the bands 2021 reimagined album A Dream Away, which featured newly encapsulated versions of beloved songs from prior releases. You can preorder the new EP here.

On the creative impetus behind "Playback '99 (Burn the Cassette Deck)", frontman Brett Detar had this to say: “At a crossroads somewhere in the desert two diverging roads meet. One sand covered street is paved with a sweet nostalgia and the other is the asphalt of accepting a current moment and the speed at which everything seems to fly by on it. Lately I find myself struggling to find a balance between these two completely different paths. Do I have to choose one or the other? Can't we somehow have both? On one hand I’ve always been quick to want to 'burn the cassette deck'– to throw away the past and everything about it (including but not limited to what the band sounded like or was known for previously – as any listening to our catalog would suggest from one era to the next). On the other hand I have an appreciation and even a longing for certain memories or eras of the past. I’m not one of those people who looks back regularly and thinks that things were better back then. I tend to try and stay present and to make the most of the current moment but there still seems to be something lost from childhood. 'Now I feel like I'm just not living if I’m just living in the past but I can’t help feeling like something’s missing, I can’t get back'"

The new single showcases the band at their dynamic best - evoking their influences but remaining utterly original in their songwriting. Detar had this to add about the bands sonic approach on the new track: “Musically 'Playback ’99' sounds exactly like a crossroads. It rides along hastily on top of layers of Joshua Fiedler’s signature guitars and energetic punk rock drums – an updated take on the band’s angstier, distorted-riff-driven songs and then makes an abrupt turn onto a hazier roadway featuring a cascade of overlaid vocal phrases before easing into a borderline dream sequence. I think what I’ve always loved about music is its ability to NOT make us choose a road. As listeners and songwriters, we are free to be transported back to a moment while simultaneously inhabiting the present. In a song time can stand still and carry you metaphysically – almost spiritually – to another place."

How is this band putting out, by far, the worst music of their career????

All of their new songs just ring so inauthentic and forced to me. It’s like they’re trend chasing without knowing what trend they’re chasing.

It still kills me how few people heard, or even realize, they made “Deadbeat Sweetheartbeat”. That record has some of the best guitar riffs I’ve ever heard. Genuinely.

Just the lyrics, all of them, are soooooo bad. Like shockingly bad.

I didn't mind "Better Now". This song I'll have to revisit when I'm half not half asleep. The music is alright and I see the direction they're going with the 3 singles over the past year. BUT obviously a fan from the UTIAD and EID days.

A Dream Away was great, I enjoyed how they reimagined those classics.

Love that Brett and Joshua are still doing their thing though!

I don't mind the lyrics for the most part. Nothing groundbreaking for the subject but I get the nostalgia sentiment.

  9. Yikes. What happened to this band?

I get what you’re saying but I don’t get it in this situation. I don’t get that term being considered derogatory. At least not anymore. But I’m definitely not the person who could make that determination.

I really think they should have just started a new band here. Not remotely close to The Juliana Theory we knew before so why put it under the same umbrella? I know bands change but its not like these guys have been remotely active for a hot minute.

I thought this song was alright. Miles better than "Can't Go Home."
