Thanks for the tip, that's kinda what I've been doing. Upped the size to 12x12 with 300 pixels per inch in photoshop (might have been overkill but oh well). Was also playing around with removing artist logos or album titles because for a lot of them I just really liked the artwork on its own.

I probably should have been more specific... I'll only be furnishing a bedroom for the most part, and I wont have to pay a mover. So really I'll just need a rug, a nightstand, a desk (found one I like for under $100 and I'd sell my current one), and maybe a cheap platform bed (I kind of like the bed on the floor look anyway). I need to get rid of junk that has just been accumulating for years.

It is so disgusting how much dog hair the roomba gets. I swept the floor before I turned it on and it already got so full I had to empty it and start it again. Gets all the little micro dog hairs the broom doesn't catch which makes mopping so much easier. Look at how disgustingly adult this post is

I've been thinking of getting one for that same reason, but we have a tranistion strip from the main room to the kitchen, and I know it won't be able to make it up - and the kitchen is 1/4 of the first floor and where a lot of food crums, etc. are so I can't justify the money when it won't even make it in there.

I'm strongly considering buying a house that's in a great location, but needs a lot of work. New kitchen. New bathroom. New floors. New deck out back. Lots of work to be done. Has anyone been a first-time home buyer that bought a house that needed a lot of work? I'm not very handy and would be hiring professionals to do almost all of the labor. I'm scared yet very excited. If anyone has gone through this, I'd be very excited to hear about it.

Yeah, this would be the route I'd take. I'm apprehensive about having all this work done, especially since I have no experience working with contractors as I've rented my whole life up to this point. That's what terrifies me the most. I feel like I could be taken advantage of for lack of knowledge/experience. Designing the interior, picking out the layout of the kitchen.. all of that is immensely interesting. I just feel incredibly naive about the whole process.

Yeah, it's tough. And my wife feels like her contractor screwed her over in the end. But ask around on Facebook to find friends who might have used one. There's tons of sites with reviews and stuff as well. Find handy friends to do smaller projects as well, save some money.

Thanks. I've been talking to some of my friends, but I figured I'd post here as well. Did your wife work with a designer or just a contractor? Also, how does she feel she was screwed over?

He short-cutted a bunch of projects, which we didn't notice until later when we had to fix it ourselves. And no, we're both creative and designed everything ourselves (as far as decorating, painting, etc.)

I posted a few pictures early on in this thread

It looks great. I love what you did with the stairwell. I've been strongly considering a grey or light blue (maybe a mix of the two) for the color of the walls downstairs with white trim and darker hardwood like you've done. It's such a great contrast.

I'm sorry you had to go through that! Care to get more specific about the shortcuts? If not, I understand.

It was five years ago, I wish I remembered more - but one specifically was the kitchen. We retiled the floor, and instead of taking out the old one, he just put it on top. Then we had an issue with the underlayment popping up, so we had to refloor the entire kitchen because it was unlevel.

Honestly, if you're not handy and do not have experience with contractors, I'd HIGHLY recommend looking for something that is more move in ready. It may cost more, but you'll be spending the money either way (either up front or later down the line via contractors and/or doing it yourself). If you do go with contractors, make sure you ask several to quote you, don't just go with the first one.

I have friends who have bought homes that needed a lot of work, but were super handy and were able to fix it up themselves (which still cost them 15-20 grand to do themselves) but I have another friend who literally just bought a house last April and basically had to tear it apart, re-do a bunch of stuff and now he's already looking to buy another home because he's sick of dealing with the work - despite him already putting a ton of money into it.

Myself, I'm not handy whatsoever, so when I bought my house three years ago, I made damn sure that it needed pretty much no work done (bought a house that was only 7-years-old).

This week I've been prepping my stuff to move, and holy shit how did I end up with so much junk? I wouldn't say my room was messy, but this stuff just came out of every drawer and corner and I ended up taking four armful's of recyclables and one bag of garbage out, plus a couple massive bags of goodwill donations. The style I'm going for in my new room in pretty minimal, so no more knickknacks for me (and I just don't want to have to move a ton of crap).

just to let everyone know i am up to owning 15 house plants and i need to be stopped. some are small though, i promise.

I spray painted a really old printer shelf unit that my parents had from probably the 90's and made it into a good place for music and stuff. also, a solid hint of all the plants i own. nearly everything i own is second hand or DIY'd. i have a cover I made out of lace curtain from thrift store over my TV cause i dont even use it lol. The planter and vases were free from my work (i work for an estate sale auction company and they were going to get donated). Also have a big tree (not in picture) that was going to get thrown away when the people moved out, so i took it home. i know plants that big aren't cheap.

I currently have two very small plants (had one of them for about two years and the other for about a year) and they're still alive, so I think a few more might be in my future once I'm settled.

Also i got this for free from work. the person who bought it didnt want to pick it up and forfeited the item so it was being donated from our warehouse. i know its fucking ugly but its super comfy. and its small, its considered a loveseat but its basically an oversized chair. one of the girls i work with used to do interior design and she fabric painted a whole couch at her house. so when it was up for donate i asked her if she would be able to help me to fabric paint it and she said its easy and she'd help me. for free, doesnt hurt to try it and id be a good place to hang out with a book or something. i dont know what color to do, i was thinking maybe a dark blue or teal.

Just moved into the new house! It's been a few weeks since I did the initial tour, and I forgot my room had a walk-in closet, so that was a nice surprise. But I also forgot my bathroom only has a pedestal sink and zero storage anywhere. It's too narrow for a standalone cabinet, but I might give this Ikea shelf a try?
