I used to go to shows in Minneap when I was 120 miles away. No excuse! lol

I've been mostly browsing this thread since the album came out and it seems to me that most of the response has been overwhelming positive, no?

I really enjoy the opening poem when I read it. The writing is good and it does an excellent job of setting the tone and encapsulating what the album is about in my opinon. However, I think it is a lazier form of getting the message across. I don't think you should be able to discredit people's opinions about it because of the artist's intent. The album does not start with a song or music and I think that was the most disengaging part of the album for me.

I do want to clarify that I love the album haha. The poem opening isn't bad, just something that will be skipped almost everytime. I'd much rather read it in the lyric booklet or hear them put it to music. I honestly was more bothered by the responses to people who were discounting the opening track.

    Just my two cents.

The abstract nature of the lyrics on here remind me of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

Loone and Told Slant were amazing, especially when TS played Tsunami and everyone sang along to the chorus. It was pretty amazing to see such strong participation for a supporting band when most people were clearly unfamiliar.

I mean, they're totally different, for sure, but I like both ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (or at least I like TMP's most recent album)

I also think both can be, and are, very emotionally cathartic for people, just in very different ways.

Has anyone done a discography listen yet? I might do that tonight, cause @CoffeeEyes17 made a really good point about the story arc (I'm pretty sure that's who said it)

The album art makes so much sense now. Absolutely beautiful.

It's been a while since an album and band have dominated my mind. The entire catalog has been on repeat for like, a month and a half now. I catch myself at the counter at work thinking OUT LOUD about these 3 albums.

I've listened to all 3 front to back a few times since I've received this album almost 3 months ago now. The main character of these albums is extremely relatable. They're emotional, confused, loving, perceptive, angry, worried, wanting more in life, socially conscious, rebellious, imperfect, and damaged. In short, they're human, a twenty something stumbling through life in the most beautiful way.

  14. I like that Told Slant song but I just can't really get into Felix's vocals. Other than that I think it's real cool.

This album is so complicated to me. Still parsing together ideas. It just runs in two directions--some stuff I absolutely love every second of and some things that I really dislike. That said, the stretch of songs from Settle The Scar through Soft Animal is very much so "the meat" of this album for me. Really broad range of emotions in there and a really great narrative and sonic flow.

I don't necessarily think this album follows a tight narrative like Home does (to me, at least). I think it's more a sampling of similar feelings of getting past rough patches and trying to reclaim the innocence lost in the process--maybe realizing that it's impossible to do so. Settle The Scar is seemingly about a romantic relationship of sorts, while Opening Mail / Soft Animal is definitely about the loss of Christian's grandmother and being "reborn" in the deer, per that Stereogum piece. Makes me wonder if that lyrical change to "collage of news hung on the wall" (or something like that) in Settle The Scar is supposed to reflect the patchwork nature of the lyrical content here. I don't know, just kind of thinking out loud as I type this.

With all that said, this album feels very personal. The kind of thing that everyone is going to fill with their own experiences, relate to in ways that they feel most apt to do so. It's a grower.

I listened to this then INOG today. I still love INOG the most, probably. That's not to start a ranking I just love that album so much and can still love it and also love how the band has evolved

Also, Two Deliverances is definitely the song that makes me think of my grandmother the most. The line about the things cluttering a bureau, clashing drapery and how the items in the room are speaking to the narrator, telling a story of a past life. I immediately got an image of walking into my grandmother's room a few days after she'd passed and seeing all of the old things she left behind. I sat on her floor for a while and stared at all the things I saw a million times before and thought nothing of, now artifacts. Idk, eerie how much he lyrics hit home

I'm glad you see the continuation of a single character too! I haven't listened to INGO in a while, but I definitely see the connection between the character in Home and in Goodness. I know Christian writes a lot of his lyrics from his own personal experiences, but I really like the separation of him and the album character.

I cant remember the last time an album united us so immaculately, we're all in here praising each others theories and having good discussion while all still getting something a little different from this one album. Home didnt even engender THIS much unique discussion.

Even just on a pure songwriting level, giving the record intense scrutiny, it holds up flawlessly (For me at least). Even my "least favorite" track gives me something to ponder and grapple with while simultaneously being a good, well structured piece of music.

Hey man I coined the term HotHELLYEAH at Southampton much to everyone else in the audience's chagrin so if anything use that pls

On a different note, loving people's interpretations of lyrics, haha. I haven't been emotionally able to connect to band lyrics at all since a really fucking weird personal incident last year that left me distant from it all, so it's really nice seeing people diving into the lyrics and coming out with their own interpretations of it, which I at the moment sincerely struggle to imagine for myself. I have serious problems even trying to find meaning and all that from the words involved in songs anymore, and rather find weight in the songwriting, if that makes any sense at all, lol. I can only get emotionally engaged with music with the tone involved.

So like, a song like Sun really fucking hits me with the buildup and the quieter verses, whereas something like Two Deliverances which is mainly lyrically heavy completely eludes me. I guess that's why I'm such a fan of Goodness Pt 2, too, because the guitar solo during that song is just such a fantastic payoff

i was really worried about how id feel about the new Settle The Scar, but i love it.
also - i think listening to the album and really paying attention to the lyrics / reading the lyrics while i listen has helped my brain realize the "Settle The Scar" is a track off of Goodness... it just fits so well with the record, and its placed in the perfect spot.
