That's the least loser question ever! I know a lot pop up in the book thread but I'd follow one for the genre specifically

We talk about a lot of horror in the book thread, but a thread dedicated just to the genre would be interesting for sure.

Just watched The Invitation. Damnnn what a great movie. Might be the best film I've seen this year.

Everyone should watch The Shallows. The visuals alone.

What other recent lesser known movies are well liked here? I saw the recommendation for Final Girls a few pages back and I am so excited to watch it. Sounds great. What else am I missing? We should have like an ongoing list.

Did anyone else who saw lights out have a big problem with the portrayal of mental illness and the mother killing herself being the solution to all the problems? seems like a pretty horrible message. But in spite of that, I thought the jump scares were really fun and was surprised how much I liked brett even though I kept expecting him to do something scummy or die.

It's still my favorite of the year. You might enjoy They Look Like People as well.

Yeah tbh that whole aspect was weird. Although I did like the message of sticking by someone who's going through stuff and not running from problems but some of the stuff with Diana and the mom was iffy. Brett was a nice surprise.

Interesting premise for sure. The cast looks great. But M Night does have an execution problem, so we'll see. You can count me in.

I just watched that as well a few days ago. I thought it was pretty good, but some of the acting/writing was pretty bad at times.

I didn't notice anything wrong with the acting/writing. What didn't you like about it?

I'm the lone wolf who didn't like that movie at all but I'm so happy LMG is getting work I don't even care

Some of the dialog was pretty poor. The Asian woman would say 'like' non stop, they are all adults in their mid 30's but are constantly calling each other "hot", etc. I enjoyed the plot and the premise, but at times it felt like they had a great short movie and werent sure how to extend it to a feature length.

I definitely didn't detect any "cheese" in the writing, I think the dialogue was fairly grounded and realistic throughout. I really liked that the movie took its time to get where it was going and imo there was enough going on that I never got bored with it. I watched this movie really late at night and usually when I do that I'll fall asleep half way through haha but this movie kept my attention and kept me awake.

If I didn't hear all the hype before I watched it I would've written it off as another boring b-list horror movie on netflix. I almost turned it off but I was determined to see it through. I love slow burners but I wasn't seeing it for that movie. I disliked pretty much everything. It was a nice house tho.

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it and I liked the over arching theme of how people deal with loss, just at times the dialog and some plot points left more to be desire.

I went into the film knowing literally nothing about it. I had no expectations so maybe that's why I was so impressed. It's always great to discover a movie you love that you weren't anticipating/didn't know existed.

Most horror movies on Netflix are shit though. I find it strange that even the good ones only have like 1 star though so apparently Netflix subscribers don't like horror movies?

i just assumed that average netflix viewers don't even bother rating titles at all for the most part. i don't think i've ever purposefully rated anything on there tbh
