Looks like Candyman got added to Netflix, which is a huge blind spot in my Horror knowledge. Probably knocking that out in the next couple nights

  2. Oh man. It's so good

  3. Also I've said it before and I'll say it again, Scary Movie 3 is the best Scary Movie. Endless quotables.

Netflix Canada’s horror section is mostly junk. Wish there was more on there I haven’t seen already to dig through this month.

Here’s my tentative list for October, in no particular order. Doubt I will get through all of these given my schedule, but I’m going to try to knock off as many possible:

    1. Scream
    2. Scream 2
    3. Scream 3
    4. Terrifier
    5. Hereditary
    6. Psycho
    7. Mother!
    8. Overlord
    9. Annabelle Creation
    10. The Shining
    11. Haunt
    12. Hush
    13. Pet Sematary (2019)
    14. Child’s Play (2019)
    15. Happy Death Day 2U
    16. Ma
    17. Crawl
    18. Suspiria (2018)
    19. Midsommar
    20. The Invitation

Never seen the large majority of them.

  9. I'm in the middle of ANOES and Puppet Master series, but with In Myers We Trust coming up, I just might have to run through F13 and Halloween again.

Was mistake. 2 spoopy. Scarred 4 lyfe.

--okay, home now. time to gather my thoughts and type the review.--

What a masterfully constructed film! The only other time I've been so terrified in the theater was Hereditary, and y'all know how I feel about that movie.

The performances by Nicholson, Duvall, heck, even the kid. The way there's foreshadowing at every turn. The way the music builds tension even when nothing's happening. The way the music meets the tension of the thing that's happening. The way the camera moves as it follows each character, down to the kid's friggin eye level. And ugh, some of those shots were just so fucking gorgeous. I'd have been in awe if I wasn't so scared out of my mind. The last thirty minutes were dreadful, even more so than the ending of Hereditary; my eyes were so tired afterward from being opened wide I don't think I blinked.

Some older horror movies that were scary when they came out aren't that scary now. I kind of wish I'd seen The Exorcist sooner in my life, I feel like I'd been desensitized by newer things I'd seen before it. The Shining doesn't have that problem. But it does have problems associated with its age. The usage of the n-word, followed by the killing of the black guy being the only on-screen death. I get it, it was a different time. I still feel like pointing it out, though. It's just, idk, I'm just thinking of how @EASheartsVinyl said they ruined Mike in It Chapter 2 especially regarding racism. But I guess that's more a failure on Muschietti's part. Can't really fault Kubrick for making The Shining when he made The Shining.

I have mixed feelings about seeing this in a theater full of people, most of whom have probably seen it already. They picked a lot of really weird places to laugh at, particularly when Jack's just being weird and creepy. I guess they were laughing at how uncomfortable the scenes were? Or maybe how the profanity kind of felt forced and unnatural? idk, their laughing at what I felt like inappropriate moments (I don't think there even are any?) really took me out of the movie. But then again, I'm so glad I didn't watch this alone.

The other day, I was watching some 25-minute video of Sarah Paulson talking about roles throughout her career. She's so cool, and idk, I find her voice soothing. Anyway, when she was talking about filming American Horror Story, she mentioned something about how she still has trouble convincing her body that the trauma of the emotions she was acting out wasn't real.

On the drive home, I was shaking.

edit: Okay, in retrospect, I feel kind of awkward about referring to Danny Lloyd as simply "the kid," I didn't know his name offhand, but I was making a point about how good he was for his age at the time. And also how short.

edit2: This whole experience felt like one big commercial for Doctor Sleep. The movie was bookended by a single trailer for it and a featurette with King, Flanagan, and McGregor. But hey, it worked. I want to see it now.

edit3: I don't think this'll haunt me the same way Hereditary did. But in the moment? Holy forking shirt balls.

Music, Gaming, Movies and Guys = Life

Not to be controversial in an intentional way but like The Exorcist I have never quite been able to get into The Shining as it is once again a film I respect and can see the many great things about it but for whatever reason, I haven't connected with it like other Stephen King adaptations but then again it differs from the novel significantly so maybe that is partly why.

Reading this was honestly a joy. Obviously not the part about you shaking or the connection to Sarah Paulson's trauma haha, but just getting to see a well constructed initial response to one of the best horror movies ever. Wish I could go back and see it again for the first time.

My favorite bit is when Charlie Sheen pulls up to his wife's accident and the guy that hit her is like, "Tom, I'm gonna need a ride home."

was so excited to hear your thoughts. I'm so glad you not only enjoyed it, but that you were so affected by it. weird to say I'm glad you were so scared haha but it's like you said some older horror films don't have that affect on the newer audience and I'm happy to hear it held up for you on such a current and fresh viewing experience. I know it creeps me out but I have all my nostalgic memories backing up those feelings.

So happy you liked The Shining! It’s probably my favorite horror film of all time. I get your reservations about how the film treats Dick Halloran, but theres just SO much subtext about race, and “the white man’s burden,” misogyny, imperialism, and all that stuff that one cant deny the film seeks to explore toxic white masculinity and its dangers in the context of an American nuclear family. I actually wrote a paper about it in college for Film as Lit class once lolz. Definitely recommend doing some research into that stuff because it really deepens the experience of the film.

I sadly left forgetting about the stuff after the credits because I had a bit of a headache. What did they show? I'm excited but hesitant for that movie. The trailers haven't completely WOWed me but I love Mike Flanagan's work and will watch anything with Ewan McGregor.

they just had some nice quotes from Flannigan, McGregor and King himself, who was very glowing in his reaction to the material even saying it was a sequel to the Kubrick film. The imagery they showed got me really excited for the fantastical elements of the book, which were my biggest concern of how to visually cover it. Looks gorgeous. I'm definitely excited. I was very sleepy by that point so I don't remember exactly what was said. I was just happy to be there hahah.

edit: I'm at work so I can't see the video but this seems like it's probably what was shown last night [Video] ‘Doctor Sleep’ Featurette is Loaded With New Footage Including First Look at Young Danny Torrance

so far today I’ve watched In Fabric, Piercing and Under the Shadow for the first time. Girlfriend is on the way home and I think we’re gonna watch Haunt and The Devil’s Candy (the only one of the bunch I’ve seen before but remember loving it)
