Did anyone see The Shape of Water yet? I’m thinking I may do that today.

 

man, Better Watch Out was interesting.

my main criticisms are some hammy acting from Luke and a few sleight of hand tricks the film does (you're telling me Luke was able to pull a tractor out of the shed without Jeremy noticing?) but i saw it as a spiritual sequel to Black Christmas (really the only reason I feel like the holiday setting is justified, but there are some fairly overt references including tying up a woman with Christmas lights), complete with a similarly feminist reading; the whole film is toxic masculine tropes competing for female affection in ways that constantly endanger the woman for their own self-gratification. all efforts of male salvation are ultimately ineffectual until female tenacity and ingenuity win out over patriarchy's attempts to survive through contortion and brutality.

Yeah it's great, not exactly horror though

 

del Toro has always had a very gothic, dramatic idea of horror... hard to pin him down.

 

Oh wow full Duplass donger in Creep 2

 

Creep 2 was...weird, but I think I liked it? I aprreciated the different angle it took for sure. Just kind of strange that entire sections of the movie didn't feel much like "horror," per se. But maybe that'll be its greatest asset on repeat viewings.

Don't watch the trailer for The Open House. Gives away most of the plot. Jan 19 on Netflix

 

Hollywood needs to learn to do trailers right

 

Like hell, go watch old grindhouse trailers on how to do it.

 

I mean honestly the title is The Open House, like for selling your house where anyone can walk in, and it's a horror movie. Do the math

There was a trailer for Silence (think that was the title) before Star Wars yesterday. Trailer / premise look intriguing but kind of gave me a vibe that there will be some weird twist like a Shymalan movie. Also very strange to see that before Star Wars.

Me too. I think I like it more than the first. And if I'm being honest it could have ended before that final scene. but I'd probably complain it ended too abruptly after she hit him in the head

 

only person i recognized was Jim from The Office. still rocking his post-Office beard too.

 

she's the mom. he's married to her IRL, and he directed this too

 

Damn! Didn't know any of that. Have been a fan of his since The Office (duh) and have enjoyed everything else he's been in. Knowing he directed this makes me that much more intrigued by it. Never imagined him directing a horror film.
