Mother! Was pretty great. If you have social anxiety and you've ever thrown a party at your house the movie watching experience is probably going to be an absolute nightmare.

It was like that episode of every sitcom where the reckless character throws a party and the straight character gets pIssed

I know I've mentioned this movie in here before but I'm gonna plug it again

Written and directed by my uncle Seth, produced by my aunt Nancy, and starring my adorable baby cousin Woodrow.

I've seen it twice now and it is excellent. Seth has such a cool and artistic style. It's showing at a few film festivals (it was just at TIFF, also playing at VIFF, Sitges, and a couple others that I can't remember lol)

Their distribution company is currently working on getting a limited theatrical release so there's a good chance some of y'all could see it!

It's kind of a horror movie, though it's not super scary, it's more creepy/unsettling, and it doesn't rely on jumpscares or gore to make it so.

If you're interested at all the globe and mail had a nice article about it the other day: TIFF 2017: Nova Scotia filmmakers get creative amid budget constraints

I enjoyed mother! But I do think it's probably my least favorite Aronfsky film.

Does anyone else think that the script was heavily influenced by JLaw's nude photo leak? It was dripping with things I feel like Jennifer would want to say or express after having that happen to her I'm just not seeing how some people didn't understand the movie as I found it to be pretty heavy handed.

Haha I didn't mean to make it sound like I was calling out people in this thread! I just meant it as a generalization. I haven't seen much discussion on the movie, just people giving it the thumbs up or down.

no no no i didnt take offense! but i am upset with myself for not seeing the forest for the trees. i think theres only discussion if the person in question gave thumbs up. a lot of people hate it and then dismiss it and see no reason for discussion. some questions that are still floating around out there are

what was the yellow stuff she kept drinking and what was up with the heart or organ in the toilet that she flushed

I felt like yellow was a color just representative of the happy life she was trying to build. The paint color for the walls are the other example of this. She went for the powder in the water every time something bothered her or her paradise was tampered with. She drank it down to soothe those bad feelings, to try to force the happiness in the face of the growing displeasure of her life. And she threw it out once she was pregnant because the baby was supposed to be that new source of happiness
To be honest I completely forgot about the other scene until you mentioned it. I can't even remember the point in the film in which it happened haha. Hmmmm....

    Actually I remember now haha.

just off the top of my head, it may have been the first subconscious realization that she had lost her ideal life for her husbands. That thing came after she was cleaning the mess of a bathroom after the two house guests invaded. Like she felt like her heart was being flushed down the toilet in favor for the love of the public

    very interesting.
i had also read that a possible interpretation of the yellow substance was faith. like every time, she got overwhelmed and needed some sort of a calm, she took it, but i think you're right. it can honestly be both i suppose. and as for the toilet scene, that makes a lot of sense and i subscribe to it

I could see that as well. I love discussing interpretations. I love seeing how others connect things. Haha just talking about the movie a little bit is actually making me realize I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I did. Maybe I just need to let it settle in.

  20. I thought It was extremely solid, especially for a 2+ hour mainstream horror blockbuster. My complaints are minor and mostly have to do with some small writing choices during the first half of the film. The child actors and Skarsgard were all great though and I loved every moment they decided to use practical effects. Can't wait for Chapter Two.

The bloody bathroom scene was especially wild and one of the more iconic moments in a horror movie I've seen this decade. Lots of stylistic choices there I really appreciated.

I'm pretty pumped for Downrange. Looks like a lot of fun, just brutal carnage.
