Most frequently, I'm on my couch watching Netflix or something in demand. I do try to see horror in theaters if it's an indie film or a franchise I care about. I usually hunt for movies on Netflix based on recommendations from people here. I do buy Blu Ray every once in a while. Usually it's because I know it's a movie I want to see again and I anticipate watching it multiple times. Very infrequent, but sometimes I'm interested in the special features, directors commentary, that stuff.

I usually watch horror movies at my house because I can't stand the theater experience, especially during horror movies. I think the most recent movies I saw in theaters were The Witch and the Blair Witch, both because I just couldn't wait. I also very much wanted to see Get Out but didn't have the time, I would have gone for that though. I feel like a lot of my horror watching comes from Amazon when they get limited theater releases early. By the time a movie is on Netflix, if I'm dying to see it I probably already have, so most of the time I'm picking those at random from the horror category, or seeing what people are talking about in this thread. I do own some blu rays, not a huge collection, but things like Get Out, Blair Witch, Babadook, Green Room, Krampus....I own so I can watch them a million times.

And on a more superficial note, I'm more likely to buy a blu ray with a good cover, or watch a movie on netflix with a thumbnail that grabs me.

Haha, I'm speaking more about super contemporary, aka brand new movies that are currently being released in theaters and physically

  4. I rented A Cure for Wellness last night and really enjoyed it. I liked that the trailers were purposely mysterious and vague regarding plot details, because I wasn't sure what to expect going in and everything felt fresh. It is definitely overlong and meanders at times, but other times it uses that timing wisely to build up extremely suspenseful or creepy moments. Dane DeHaan's acting is also hammy for the first half of the film, but I grew to appreciate his performance by the end. Aside from that, it's a visually interesting, ambitious and original film with a great payoff. It's a shame it didn't do better critically/commercially.

I'd liken it to a combination of Shutter Island and The Shining (despite never quite reaching the heights that those do).

I steam movies on Netflix & Hulu, recently got in on Shudder as well. There's also a free-to-watch (with ads) section of Vudu that has some good stuff. I occasionally pay to rent VOD titles but I think the prices are steep for me. I go to the movies once or twice a month and try to see movies at Alamo Drafthouse whenever I can. I choose what I watch based on what people are saying in places like this thread and a podcast I listen to. I buy Blu Ray because I prefer physical media for collection purposes (I do have a digital collection, but I only buy digital when the movies are on sale for $10 or less). I do buy recent films. I'm on a budget though so I usually wait for sales

    I think that's everything!

I consume horror however I can be it streaming, in theaters, or on blu-ray. If I've seen a movie and love it enough, I'll definitely buy it on blu-ray. I don't really blind-buy any movies. I try to see horror movies I'm excited for in theaters, given they get released in my area. I decide what to see in theaters based on critical/festival hype or if I'm really intrigued by the first trailer or the director involved. Same goes for Netflix. If word of mouth on the internet and reviews are positive, I'll check it out.

Thanks to everyone who is providing intel, definitely in line with the overall trend these days overall, but it's nice to read more specific cases

  8. watching horror movies in the theater is always such a risk, especially stuff like the paranormal activity franchise. you want to see it in a theater where you have the big screen, great audio, and comfy seats and popcorn. but there's always assholes who make fart sounds during the intense/quiet scenes because they're (a. trying to get a chuckle out of the audience who is all on the edge of their seats, or b. because they're scared but don't want to look like a wuss next to their date) and I can't stand that shit! like, just let everyone around you enjoy the movie! so that's always something i think about every time i go see a horror movie. like, is this going to be annoying with other people? do i see this ASAP before i hear any spoilers? do i wait until i can download it/buy it? if i'm afraid about the crowd, i'll usually go see it on a sunday or sometime during the afternoon/early evening before people are taking their dates out.

going to the movies can really suck sometimes when you just want to sit and enjoy it... haha. i sound like an old man.

  9. 10pm showings on a discount Tuesday are what work best for me, but I've had my share of bad theater experiences. I get annoyed by even the most minute distractions during a movie but love seeing movies on the big screen, so I usually just hope for the best.

I plan on seeing It Comes at Night in theatres but probably at the Alamo Drafthouse because I almost always have positive experiences there.

I just watched A Cure for Wellness and I really regret deciding not to check it out when it was playing theatrically. It rivals The Shining in terms of cinematography

I haven't seen the trailer but you don't have to worry about it showing all the best bits. Two and a half hours of beauty that movie is

Watching this weekend. Don't have enough time during the week to watch a 2+ hour movie. Anxious and excited.

It Comes At Night was exceptional, although the audience I watched it with certainly didn't get what they were looking for.
There was more of a reaction to the Annabelle trailer beforehand than the actual film.

Bought A Cure for Wellness today. It's a blind buy. I haven't bought a movie on blu-ray in years. Not sure why I did (other than it not being available for rent on amazon for some fucking reason) but I've been interested in the flick since I saw trailers for it. Can't wait for tomorrow night.
