Really? I don't mind slip ups like that at all. It might keep it from being a 10 if it were otherwise perfect, but it definitely doesn't take me out of the movie

It's kinda surprising how certain details slip past filmmakers like that. For example, Dallas Buyers Club takes place in the 80's and in one scene, there is a TV in the dude's trailer that's from the 2000s. Like is it really that hard to find old stuff to fill a set with?

I was surprised, since Ridley Scott produced it. While the budget was low, those are easily fixable things. If you're adding a movie reference, it's probably a good idea to check if that movie has been released in the time frame of your plot. If you can't afford to park a bunch of 90s style vehicles to be in the background of your shot, maybe move the scene to an empty field or something. The water bottle thing I can let slide.

got to Split, it... hrm. goddamn, people gotta stop letting M Night write his movies (and cameo in them) without more supervision. he has interesting techniques of conveying plot events (sometimes indulgent, sometimes so quality that when other shots are cliched it's glaring). his characters, while not very complex, are usually human and identifiable, and honestly he gets good enough performances out of his actors that it covers up a lot of their patchiness. but the fact that this film takes itself so damn seriously means it shoots itself in the foot a) when it gets out of control dumb and b) when you consider how exploitative it really is. i mean, it's a gamut of troubling tropes on sexuality, sexual assault, gender identity, and mental illness. and unlike exploitation films, it wants you to take it seriously, to just buy into its ideas, instead of treating them like subversive trash that knows it's stupid and meant to shock.

Signs and Unbreakable are interesting because of their unique perspectives; Split is so narratively pedestrian, until it starts just being stupid as his movies seem to do these days. i get that all of his personas are different, but do we really need a nerdy historian and a female Brit and a 9 year old with a lisp and a mash up of Derek Vinyard and Venom? it gets to a point, pretty damn quickly, where it stops serving the movie any real purpose once it's stopped generating tension. surely at some point McAvoy realized "hang on, this is just dumb," and his talents weren't really going towards a substantial role at all?

idk. i liked The Visit. but this is not really a return to form for M Night for me, except in the sense that his form was mostly too damn indulgent and naive.

usually when i write up thoughts on movies, i stop after 1-2 sentences, keep it simple. when i get rolling, it means it's really gonna go one way or another (or be so aggressively middling i hate it)

Aside from The Happening, I really connect with characters in M. Night movies.

  12. Phoenix Forgotten was boooorrrrring. Holy hell. The usual complaint people have about The Blair Witch apply to this tenfold because its pacing is atrocious.

Plus, not a single goddamn alien. Like, I get it. This movie went for realism over watchability. But it's just not good enough to pull that off. When I go see a trashy found footage flick, I at least expect some kind of payoff. Yeesh.

Yes, it was slow. They abandon the documentary format in the final act, and just go with the found footage of the last tape. That was such a weird choice, since we followed the grown sister for an hour.

Been a huge fan of this show since day 1. Season 5, and the ending, was an absolute perfect one that was really the only possible way I could see it ending. They nailed it.

Yea, I had a feeling it was going to end that way, the only other possibility wasn't a satisfying one.

Well now, should be interesting, I guess.

I saw Split a few days ago, it was alright.

  19. Haven't seen Unbreakable, and Split was decent. The Visit is my jaaaaam though. Has that classic Signs/Sixth Sense vibe, but with a little humor thrown in as well.

Unbreakable is probably his best film. I just don't buy the fact that The Beast was always supposed to be in the same universe as Unbreakable. It reminds me when he claimed The Happening was intentionally corny/funny/horrible. The only problem is he said this AFTER the slew of negative reviews came out.

Split was great until the Unbreakable tie in and then it fell apart (FOR ME, IN MY OPINIOM ETC) so I am much less excited to hear the news of pt. 3

The Beast's character was part of the original Unbreakable script. He cut it out due to length of the script.

And that is actually verified? Like a copy of the script dating back to pre-production?

Split as a tie in for Unbreakable is supremely dumb and further entrenches how fucking exploitative that movie is

So the last 10 seconds negated the rest of the movie for you? I haven't seen Unbreakable, so it didn't do anything for me, but it didn't impact my opinion of the movie either
