I love almost all the big names in the mumblecore scene, and it's so cool that so many of them clearly have an interest in horror too

Ti West sucks. House of The Devil was cool and The Innkeepers had promise but The Sacrament said everything I needed to know about him. He blantely ripped off the Jonestown massacre, did a piss poor job of recreating it in the woods of Georgia, had terrible hammy actors play the roles and best of all, chickened out on a great twist ending according to the script.

The Sacrament might actually be my favorite of his films. Innkeepers was forgettable and House of the Devil was a little too light on substance to be great

Given how closely the sacrament was based off Jonestown, it's remarkable it didn't feel more exploitative

Yeah I liked The Sacrament more than House of the Devil. Though I do need to revisit the latter

Let Us Prey was decent. Didn't love it but it had a couple good performances

The Ti West formula in a nutshell:

Introduce some characters and have them meander about for 75% of the run time. Interject some "witty" or "funny" dialogue, then throw massive amounts of shit at a fan and watch it fly all over everything.

So Bates Motel ended last night, has anyone seen anything from this season? Or at least familiar with the core group of characters?

This is You're Next you're describing i think

Jkjk but seriously I wish the dinner table conversation made up like the bulk of the movie instead of a throwaway scene

House of The Devil was the most egregious offender of this, maybe followed by The Innkeepers.

Been a while since I've posted on here. Only real noteworthy movie I saw was You're Next. Solid movie.

House of the Devil was not funny if my memory serves correct, and I don't think it threw a bunch of shit at the fan - quite the opposite. Careful and calculated control of tension leading to a batshit climax that didn't feel unearned at all. Don't really buy that criticism.

I need to watch it again tbh, honestly I was too busy geeking out over how cinematically period it was haha

There wasn't comedy in House of The Devil, but it also wasn't slow burn, it was flat out boring and relied on the aesthetic rather than the story itself. The climax was the "shit hitting the fan" because it all comes at you in a huge wave and completely doesn't match the tone of the other 90% of the movie.

DrStrong calling House of the Devil boring is the least surprising post in a while

  21. I didn't like The Sacrament, but I like Ti West. I still haven't got around to watching In a Valley of Violence, probably because it's not horror and it probably won't live up to other great Westerns I've seen recently.

I saw the first 15 or so minutes of Valley of Violence and it was pretty damn boring.

  24. Ti West's movies tend to be slow burn, so this doesn't surprise me. I like the cast, so I may watch it eventually.

Phoenix Forgotten was disappointing. They didn't balance the mystery and the horror very well. The thing that pissed me off the most was the errors made by the writer/director. Some major goofs, especially in the 1997 footage:

    1. Homeless man being interviewed has a modern water bottle with the small cap. I'm pretty sure the small caps weren't around until after 2010.

    2. The main girl is being interviewed in the parking lot of a strip mall. Several parked cars appear to be from the 2000s.

    3. The main girl and guy are videotaping their hike, mention something that reminds them of the movie "Contact" and how much they loved the movie. The footage is March 1997, and "Contact" wasn't in theatres until July 1997.
