i was lukewarm on Hush, why the strong negative take?

also don't forget Antibirth, although it sounds like it might not be your thing cause it's pretty slow in the beginning

I'm just so tired of these home invasion style movies, or the reverse take on the genre (You're Next and Hush particularly). When it comes to this type of genre, I prefer the likes of the following:

    Secuestrados (2010) - IMDb
    Inside (2007) - IMDb
    The Strangers (2008) - IMDb
    Funny Games (2007) - IMDb

I think you see where I'm going with this.

Inside is probably my favorite NFE, the strangers and funny games were pretty good as well. actually have not seen Secuestrados. i thought Hush did a decent job of implementing its deaf protagonist to set it apart, but otherwise was fairly forgettable

I think this is the most negative review I've ever read about this movie

Kidnapped (Secuestrados) is awesome, and completely fucked up. I think I prefer the "bad guys win" home invasion flicks.

I mean, I didn't see anything particularly special here. Like I said the brutality was top notch, but Stewart could have been any actor since he didn't bring anything unique to his role. Maybe the hook was that Patrick Stewart is portraying a neo-Nazi?

imo Green Room's biggest strengths were how genuinely it portrayed the underground punk scene and how expertly it controlled tension. as a result, it's not strictly "memorable" as much as it is a vindication of the genre i think

I did appreciate that aspect, it was like American History X mixed with SLC Punk, then turn the violence way up.

I didn't find Patrick Stewart's performance particularly great either, but like Spencer said, the depiction of the grimy punk scene and the circumstances the characters get into is done with such conviction and sincerity, and I think that's why so many people are infatuated with this movie. It's hard not to get immersed in that world.

And yeah, Kidnapped is fantastic. Home invasion movies and movies that largely take place in one setting are my thing

you don't like You're Next? That movie is a perfect mix of horror, humor and ass kicking.

I'm all about the suspension of disbelief, but I have my limits especially when a movie is based in a realistic world with realistic situations.

I must not be remembering something outlandish. This is not snark; my attention span/memory issues are well documented in other places on this site.

If you have a group of heavily armed people, all converging on someone who isn't armed, the result would 100% be the same.

Not sure I agree with that. I Don't Feel at Home in this World Anymore is just as good if not better than Green Room to me though

yeah i wish they had done a tad more with him, he did the "chillingly pragmatic antagonist" well but none of his was really exceptional. the closest it got to interesting was Anton's line where he's like "you were so much scarier at night" and it's just this perfectly absurd and childish but totally sensible sentiment

original Maniac is a classic. new one is a little too uneven and gimmicky

The Girl With All The Gifts was pretty damn good. The girl who played the lead was fantastic. Can't believe she hasn't been cast in anything else.
