I'm actually quite fond of anthology horrors, but Holidays didn't do much for me. My favorite was either the New Year's Eve one even though it was predictable, or the Father's day one.

Now Southbound. Loved it. If you haven't seen it then I highly recommend that anthology.

And while on the topic of anthologies, this has most likely been posted but I figured I'd mention it again. It's an "all-female helmed horror anthology featuring four dark tales written and directed by fiercely talented women"

Southbound was ok. Holidays was mostly bad with a couple good shorts.

Been looking forward to XX a couple years now

Aw just okay? I really like when anthologies in particular link the separate short films together so they are all part of the same storyline / universe. It makes me wonder how the writing process went and if they all had to work together even though they were making their own short films. But yeah, XX should be really good.

ooh, that does look fun. i think a key is that you need a unifying artistic vision as well as something cohering the films - more than just a frame narrative, that's like the bare minimum. because otherwise, shit, i just want to watch the short films on their own, or watch a full film of just one of them. justify your anthology's functional existence.

but southbound looks dope, i'll peep that for sure. don't know how it wasn't on my radar

It's been a while since I saw it so I'm foggy on the specifics but I think I liked about half of the shorts. I did like how it was tied together too

  6. I did not like Southbound unfortunately

Thoughts on The Monster: overall I liked it. Simple premise, one main location, good old fashioned monster story...but those flashbacks. As a child of two alcoholics, that shit hits really close to home.

Everything you said is spot on. I also love the fact that the majority of the shots of the actual monster weren't CGI - it reminded me of older monster movies, specifically from the 80s, like Pumpkinhead. I haven't read up much on the actual writing process to know if the symbolism was intentional or not, but after having watched the movie I feel as though the "monster" was moreso the alcoholism the main adult actress was struggling with rather than the monster itself (or that could just be me looking for something that isn't there). And also having been raised in similar situations, that aspect of the film definitely hit close to home for me as well.

"A Cure for Wellness" was disappointing. Some cool imagery, but the plot was lacking and the run time was too long.

This is kind of what I'm expecting - the trailers just gave me the vibe of a bunch of cool imagery that wasn't gonna cohere effectively. Sad to hear that. Still, I'll check it at some point.

Anybody else watch Killer Clowns From Outer Space on a weekly basis when they were young? It's been probably a decade since I've watched it, but I use to eat it up.

Mine was the faculty. We'd rent that and spice world every week from Hollywood video. The deal where you got two movies, a candy, a popcorn, and a soda

I watched that a lot too. I remember thinking Zeke was the coolest, most badass character I'd seen in horror when I was a kid.
