I watched No Escape last night, which topped the top 10 2015 horror list that was made by the same guy who said Terminator is an 80s slasher. This is an even bigger stretch, and it really depends on what you consider a horror movie. Is it just material that is horrifying? Because if that's the case, this is certainly a horror movie. Owen Wilson in the lead did a pretty fantastic job, and after the first 20 minutes the movie is pretty much pedal to the floor. But bringing it up amidst talk of Black Christmas really makes the differences stand out in what is normally considered "horror"

it didn't even make sense though. besides obviously being tasteless, which, you know, i get, it's horror, but if she hates her son and his yellow skin why would she...

I finally watched Trick 'r Treat. It was okay, not amazing or anything though. Better than Southbound, Holidays and Tales of Halloween, although honestly that isn't saying much. I'm starting to think horror anthologies just aren't for me, VHS 1&2 are the only ones I think are great.

I highly suggest everyone take time to watch the film classic "The 'Burbs" this week, in memory of a woman who was way more than Princess Leia.

I was just thinking today how I could go for another viewing of that movie, and I forgot that she was even in it! Definitely firing up my VHS player tonight and giving it a watch

I only just watched it this past summer, but I already feel a weird sort of nostalgic connection to it. I think that's why I was dwelling on it today. It feels like a movie I grew up with

I really enjoyed the autopsy of jane doe. I've been thinking about it since I saw it and the more I think about it the more it creeps me out.

    Same. Really loved the ending.

Have to share this because I'm really excited for our local film industry. Every Christmas we have a film festival that's supposed to showcase the best Filipino movies we have. Previously it was just this horrible attempt to market the same old franchises (a lot of these movies have been milking its way to part 7 or 8) but this year they didn't, and instead picked mostly indie films. It was a huge change and a good one since there are so many talented directors and good movies here that really deserve the exposure.

One of those, and my personal favorite is Seklusyon, which is about a ritual for priesthood wherein the undergoers need to lock themselves up in this convent for a week and overcome the ordeal. We're mostly a Catholic country so it was also pretty relevant. Not sure when it'll be available internationally but I hope it does soon.

I really wish Joe Dante had a more prolific career. He grew up watching the classic horror films in the theater and combined it with comedy in his earlier films. He would cast great character actors like Dick Miller, Robert Picardo, John Astin, and Henry Gibson. He combined his love of WB cartoons with Gremlins II and Loony Tunes: Back in Action. We should have seen more films by him in the last 15 years.

Small Soldiers was another one I loved growing up. Looney Tunes: Back in Action even more so. I've been meaning to check out The Hole, I'm curious about what that one is like

I guess I should have phrased that better. He's made two films since Small Soldiers (in addition a bunch of TV work) but I just meant the amount of movies he's done in the 80s would be consistent through the next few decades. I understand getting a movie made is a ton of work, especially when studios/financiers think you've lost momentum as a filmmaker (where Dante peaked in the 80's). I just love his style of film and little winks to movies that influenced him. Just wished there would be more of that through the years.
