Edit:finished it. This movie had so many chances to be better than it was. Feel like I spent the whole time listening to the main character's voiceover instead of learning more about what went on in the house/the woman she was caring for.

 

The Monster was better than I expected. Can't imagine the budget was even decent, yet the effects were impressive.

 

My cat is a big fan of doing that during movies as well.

Worth a watch or skip?

It's only like 85 minutes so yes. but if you don't like slow burns skip it.

 

Watched these films at AFI Fest yesterday.

Prevenge. A uniquely dark comedy that simultaneously incites laughter and cringe (the enjoyable kind). Strong effort from Writer/Director/Star Alice Lowe, who actually made the movie while she was pregnant, so no prosthetic.

The Lure. A Polish Horror/Musical about two mermaid sisters. I hesitate to say anything else about it really. It's beautifully bizarre.

I liked The Monster. It's not top 10 of the year or anything, but it's a nice little movie that strikes an emotional tone most movies in the genre don't attempt.

Finally saw 31. It was...not great. But still a lot of fun.

 

kinda bummed they're doing a Don't Breathe sequel, doesn't really feel necessary. but I've loved both of his movies so I'm sure it'll be good.

Have you guys seen the Japanese film Battle Royale? I only recently heard about it and apparently it's a big deal. Thinking of checking it out tonight

 

I've always heard about it, but haven't actually checked it out yet. It got brought up a lot when the first Hunger Games movie came out.

 

it's pretty well put together and inventive. basically a grittier (and earlier ofc) Hunger Games. i enjoyed it. not sure it falls under horror, per se, and it's gotten a little campier with time, but certainly culturally significant such that it deserves a watch even if it ends up not being your thing

 

Battle Royale is awesome. I just watched it for the first time a few months back. Very cool stuff, and it's available on Netflix.

 

I haven't seen it in a while, but I must have watched it once a year in college so definitely something I really enjoyed. Need to rewatch that...

 

My Babadook replica came this week. It's so awesome. I'm watching the movie tonight to celebrate

 

I thought Trash Fire was ok. Not really horror, but it gets brought up in those circles and is labeled as such on IMDB. It's an odd and uncomfortable movie about toxic people/relationships, so not really up my alley. Acting was decent. Wouldn't mind seeing Adrian Grenier in more serious roles. Only knew him from Entourage.

 

Adrien is in the masterpiece Drive Me Crazy as well!!!!
