You can really see how much sex(uality) has ramped up in horror - just watch any original and then its remake. Even for a sex filled genre, the sex permeates.

    but does it djent?

Just want to throw in my appreciation for the Saw series. I'm going through and watching them one by one up until Halloween, all for the first time mind you. I'm watching Saw IV tonight. It's actually a pretty decent series that doesn't bombard you with stale jumpscares or over-sexuality ( only instance I've seen so far is the nude girl in the freezer in Saw III). It's just a good old fashioned thriller with gore that even has me cringing every now and then.

it's so much more interesting when it's more than titillation - cronenberg is particularly great with using sex to examine the twisted nature of humans, and body horror often touches a similar nerve

Oh yes. Plus the act of sex itself puts the participants in a vulnerable state, and vulnerability is a touchstone of horror. Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious ha

You know, I think the only Cronenberg movie I've seen is The Fly. Hmmmm

videodrome is pretty fuckin' freaky. a history of violence is fairly meditative and and crash is particularly enamored with the idea of weird sex, too. they all mix horrifying ideas of it in their own way.

I loved Lights Out. Perfect for what it was. I feel like it's worth mentioning when we're talking about great recent horror.

I didn't think it was great at all, passable but very average

Not to disparage others' enjoyment of it, but like Last Shift it's another movie that didn't land for me

Lights Out is great, Last Shift was okay at best

Still need to see Lights Out. Last Shift was indeed okay at best.

I thought Last Shift was great. Reminded me a lot of a Silent Hill game. If we're comparing the two though I thought Lights Out was better

iirc i liked last shift in theory, but it needed to go through a few more drafts to cohere and stand out - the tiny budget showed given the one woman act in a one building setting (although it accomplished more than some low budget horror for sure). i liked the weirdish scares and the aforementioned silent hill feeling of a station existing in a horror and human realm, and i remember really liking the phone call with her father, but overall the story was fairly rote and din't really hold the scares together like it needed to. the ending was also weak and typical.

that said, i'm rewatching it now lol. let's see if my ops change

I didn't really find anything to like about it. It felt cheap and not really well thought out, like all there was to it was the character turning around corners and ghost shit happening. It's one of few movies I've been angry after watching, thought it might be partially due to expectations after the praise I saw for it beforehand

this is about where my flatmate stood with it, and the lack of a cohesive, compelling story was my main complaint as well.

i will say in my second watch i'm appreciating again the tension of a female cop trying to fill her dad's shoes on her first day. there are certainly horror movies with shoddier reasons why the main character didn't just call for help. not sure how long that'll hold up though.

The Canal has some interesting themes and there was potential for a good story there, but it plays out in a well worn "real or hallucination" ghost story with all the weight of evidence put on the latter. It's also a slow burn, which when everything that's apparently happening is on the surface doesn't make it very compelling.

it's not the most frightening film but it dealt with its themes in a very Kingsian (is that a word? is stephen king influential enough?) way which i think lends to its accessibility.

one of the things that i find most upsetting is when people complain about the kid being annoying in that film. that was the POINT YO

That may be the point but it doesn't make him any less annoying haha

oh right. i just don't think it's quite fair to dislike the movie on those grounds, at least not without explicating a betetr way for the movie to have explored its themes of a mother tired of caring for her annoying special needs kid

That kid in the babadook was pretty realistic for a child that has gone through so much instability. I def know kids like that so I enjoyed that they went there.

  25. Another Collider list, this time for the 2000s. Great to see Triangle and Session 9 on there, super underrated. And Martyrs is top 3 all-time for me, so I'm glad to see that on here as well.
