Sheesh. Once you see the full scope of the movie (I don't want to spoil anything), I can kiiiiinda understand what they're trying to say I guess, but yeah definitely has some of the most jarring and bizarre/disturbing imagery of any other movie of it's kind. I'd certainly call it horror in the true sense of the word (and a lot of that as a counterpoint to that individual's argument based on what I think they are saying). It also inspired a lot of Silent Hill, so like ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  2. My main sticking point is that horror has to have some element of the "fantastical" or non-realism to be considered horror; horror can absolutely be realistic, and beyond that point, the movie has plenty of "nonrealistic" moments (whether they're actually happening or not)!

It's a terrifying movie and absolutely a psychological horror film in my eyes.

  5. Watched all of Swarm today, really enjoyed it. I'm hardly an expert in specifically black horror, but I feel like the main protagonists in Swarm and Sissy, and I guess also 2021 Candyman, occupy this liminal sort of morally ambiguous space where the violence isn't outright justified or demonized

Watched Influencer on Shudder, really fun one. Just a really surprising and engaging premise with solid execution.

Went with A24’s The Monster last night. The phenomenal acting saved an otherwise boring feature-length movie. That kid - my god she was incredible.

  11. Highly recommending Targets if anyone is looking for a recommendation. 1968 flick about a spree killer that pre-dates the mass shooting phenomenon while also starring Boris Karloff as an aging horror star, so basically a fictionalized version of himself. The POV sniper thing is absolutely a precursor to Halloween and other slashers, it's pretty shocking for the time and feels proto-Tarantino as well. Karloff is ridiculously charming and the movie itself is super tense.

Man, TCM is such a great summer horror watch. It’s so fucking deranged.. wild to think that it’s got 5 years on Halloween.
