Sorry to keep going on about Cabinet of Curiosities, but we finished it last night and this is a pretty good write-up and ranking. Do not fully agree with their rank (I'd move Pickman's Model up higher), but it's not bad and acts as a good summary of the show without revealing any spoilers - although I would still suggest going in completely blind on some of these.

I really liked Cabinet of Curiosities although I skipped the Amirpour and Cosmatos ones because they didn't seem to match the spooky vibe I was looking for and I never got to the Kent one.

Yeah, those two are a bit more unconventional but stand up on their own legs in their own right and I would recommend them both for different reasons. Especially The Viewing if you enjoy or like Cosmatos’s work.

  8. I thought "The Viewing" was a total slog. Maybe I just wasn't in the right headspace, but it was easily my least favorite of the series. "The Autopsy" and "The Outside" were my favorites, and "The Murmuring" was really beautiful but kind of slow.

  9. Always forget that David Koechner is in Final Destination 5 lol

Terror Vision, an independent boutique label, is doing a subscription service. $225 for the next 10 releases (and a shirt) with free shipping. I bit the bullet (with Amazon Pay in 4) because I’ve liked everything they’ve put out. Some cool SOV sleeze on the horizon

  12. So much more affordable than VinSyn's sub, too. Fuck. That Pay in 4 is not a bad option.

You gotta assume they’d grab the WNUF sequel. Plus their research and ability to track down lost films rules. Brad Henderson is a cool dude.

Okay so i’m gonna be honest, I certainly haven’t given it a fair shake. I watched Things and a little bit of Sledgehammer but that’s it. So, im open to taking on recs

I still haven’t seen Things but Sledgehammer is definitely a tougher one to start with hahaha. The hangout beer drinking part in the first half is the reason I like it.

I think Scary Tales was what made me fall in love with the subgenre. Just the idea that a lot of these are weirdos with a camera paying their friends in beer to shoot a movie during weekends is endearing. Also something super nostalgic to see the insides of a lot of random homes in the late 80s-early 90s. The Casio scores are pretty brilliant too.

Coupling all of that with the two Bleeding Skull books and the Letterboxd reviews of some of the more entertaining users is a solid way to get into them.

From there, the Video Violence films are a lot of fun. The Polonia brothers made some really fucked up, impressively gory flicks too. Splatter Farm being the favorite of what I’ve seen.

I think Black Devil Doll From Hell is the weirdest, most fucked up and ridiculous movie I’ve ever seen. So if you wanna just shock the system, do that one. Between seeing that, and then Ossos and Come and See and Queen of Diamonds in the same calendar year it really numbed me to like…normal movies hahaha.

It’s genuinely hard for me to fully engage with something like The White Lotus (a random pick, the most recent thing i watched…also a good show!) because of how far I’ve seen the boundaries of film/tv pushed to either side

  20. Seconding the Scary Tales/Video Violence recs. I have also come to love Sledgehammer and Things, but those are next level lol.

Thinking I'll double-feature Splatter Farm and Black Devil Doll From Hell tomorrow.
