  1. Isn't Green Inferno known for being extremely problematic in its portrayal of an indigenous culture?

  2. This I actually haven't read up on -- I only know it as an homage to Cannibal Holocaust, which I do not like -- but considering it's Eli Roth, I wouldn't be surprised. Will report back though

  3. Read up on Roth's defense of the film and I don't fully agree with it, but I will say 30 minutes in that white saviorism is absolutely not being portrayed positively

  4. I also don't think I've liked a single Eli Roth movie aside from Cabin Fever so hopes are not high lol

Eli Roth’s films are generally chock full of problematic elements. I LOVE Cabin Fever and Hostel, but damn the dialogue gets rough..

  7. Yeah Roth has always struck me mostly as a very knowledgeable tool. This one's just been on my list for a while

I forgot all about Hostel. That movie stuck with me for a long time when it first came out

I’ve had people swear to me it was better than Cannibal Holocaust, I also walked out of those conversations

  11. I mean, on the sole basis that there's no real-life animal cruelty, it is lol

Backcountry is fantastic. It’s always on my “summer horror” rotation.

See, I don’t mind that people are against that element of the movie, Ruggero Deodato himself had expressed regret and remorse for filming those scenes later in his life. There are versions of the movie that removes them, there’s an upcoming UK UHD release that is such a version. The Green Inferno was Roth making a lazy shock movie (big surprise) and it was such a waste of time.

  15. Yeah I'm not a Roth defender, I just think there's a number of legitimate grievances against Cannibal Holocaust as well.

The cannibal exploitation sub-genre in general is problematic, it is at its core exploiting stereotypes of native people to create schlock designed to shock people. CH at the very least points that out, with the American film crew committing atrocities and using it to blame the native people and portray them as evil. It’s flimsy for sure but it’s why CH is the apex of that category of horror movies and why it didn’t thrive beyond that.

It’s also why The Green Inferno didn’t work as a movie. Eli wanted to make this “shocking” homage to the exploitation movies of yore but he’s genuinely not smart or clever enough to make a good movie out of it. You had aggressively white people basically spending most of the movie in a cage with pathetic one by one killings throughout and of course, the lame token white guy goes full evil and embraces the native cannibal culture because he’s a piece of shit. I wasted money and time I’ll never get back sitting through that.

  19. More Maika Monroe horror to look forward to.

  20. And some animated spookiness from Henry Selick and Jordan Peele.

That was incredible. Perfect buildup of tension. Truly iconic visuals. So terrifying. Glad my first time seeing this and The Shining was in theaters, what amazing experiences.

Definitely see its influence on Nope now, which makes me appreciate Nope even more, fantastic homage
