  1. After watching Jennifer's Body I wanted to see more by Karyn Kusama so I gave The Invitation a shot. It's a bit of a slow burn as it builds tension and exposition, even coming in at around ninety minutes it feels a little too long, but the climax makes it worthwhile. Tonally it's very different from Jennifer's Body, much more unsettling. At its emotional core, though, it's a story about grief, and it handles that surprisingly well for something that on the surface is just a mystery thriller.

  2. Gonna revisit Hell Fest sometime this week. Remember it being a very solid teen slasher. Plus, Tony Todd!

I remember seeing Annie's film before one of her shows. The crowd seemed so perplexed. Lol. I thought it was good fun.

TTCM in theater tonight, Young Frankenstein performed by a local live theater outfit at their outdoor venue on Saturday, and then Rocky Horror in theater after that. Hoping to finish Midnight Mass and cover a few more off our list in between. Good week!

She had it open select dates on the MASSEDUCTION tour. That was a solo show at King's Theater in Brooklyn. I saw her on the same tour in Delaware and she didn't show it but had a full band. It was weird lol.

Have you seen Haunt? Similar premise, but by far the superior film, imo.

I haven't called much for any of the "haunted attraction is actually real" movies

  9. Yep! A couple of times. Definitely the better film, but I watched it last Halloween with The Last Drive-In. Don't think I've seen Hell Fest since it hit DVD.

Might be time to revisit Hell House LLC and The House October Built, as well.

  10. Should I rent The Night House? Heard some extremely positive things from friends, and I see it's gotten strong reviews, but for reference, I'm not a huge fan modern haunted house stuff i.e. the Conjuring Universe (beyond the first two) and the Mike Flanagan shows. Don't mind a slowburn, but I need a little more to keep my interest.

I still haven't watched it but wasn't even sure if it was a ghost movie or if that was just misdirection

I enjoyed it but wouldn't recommend anyone going out of their way to see it. It's definitely a slow burn but had enough mystery surrounding it to keep me engaged the whole time. I feel like most folks will either really like or dislike the ending also. I really liked it. Rebecca Hall is great and it definitely reminded me of Bruckner's other stuff than anything Flanagan. House of Leaves too.

Rebecca Hall is the reason I was interested in the first place

I am going to rewatch the Rob Zombie Halloween movies tonight. I remember thinking the first was okay, better than everyone said, but this was back when Zombie’s schtick actually appealed to me, so we’ll see. My memory of the second was in line with some of the users here that argued it was extremely underrated if not brilliant, but again, this was before his work became nearly unwatchable for me. Yesterday, before I decided to rewatch both, I started the second one and just as I was getting excited about it a guy began talking about having sex with corpses, so my expectations are now extremely tempered.

  16. The Night House has a very interesting mystery at the center of it, while also exploring how grief can look in both private and public situations. I liked it a lot and Rebecca Hall was great. It does some pretty cool things visually as well

there are moments in both that I really hate and roll my eyes at and wonder why Zombie just had to put his weird “touch” on the franchise that mirrors all his other works (crass language, hillbilly terrible characters) but I’ve grown to love the second film more and more over the years. It’s a film that really shows the impact of surviving a mass murderer and what that could do to a person. I can’t think of another film that does that, so major points there. And Scout’s performance is terrific in both films in very different character head spaces.

As you mentioned…the real takeaway from zombies films is that Scout deserved more attention from Hollywood. I found her to be a powerhouse, personally.

There are so many cool shots and needle drops in both films. The headlight murder in 2 is so good

  22. Final Girl was one of those blind buys for like five bucks, I've had it for a while and just now got around to it. I'm kind of surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Although I do feel like its subversiveness is rather superficial, Abigail Breslin puts in a great performance and the way the film is shot, especially the way it plays with lighting and shadows, is so unique and captivating. DVD special features were a bit lacking, and the director was kind of annoying.

Not really horror but Night Teeth was mostly whatever. Some fun moments. Mostly sad about Megan Fox and Sydney Sweeney only being in one scene

  24. Watching The Long Halloween part one without having read it; despite what the title would suggest, most of it doesn't actually take place on Halloween, nor is it very horror-y. Still a pretty dark Batman story so far, with a gritty art style to match.

    I miss Naya.
