This was fine. You have seen its parts many times before but Payne's empathy for his characters makes it better than most of the others.

I didn't know Louis XIII was a real drink. There is an entire episode of The Larry Sanders Show that revolves around Arty trying to buy Larry a bottle for his birthday. When the five kids were hanging out introducing each other and talking about the one kid's long hair it felt like a Richard Linklater movie.

As the potential romance between Giamatti and the secretary started to develop it really started to feel like Sideways again, so luckily that was abandoned.

The conclusion with Mary was the most touching and nuanced. There is no magic ending. A romance won't fix it and the new baby won't fix it, but you can wake up every day and try your best and make those connections around you to help fill the void.

Really enjoyed this and my crowd really ate it up. More laughter than any comedy I've seen recently.

I take back what I said about this movie.

We saw it in an auditorium with like 40 seats (and 10 MAYBE were being used)

When I ran a theater - I had 2 auditoriums and there were 500 seats in each!

But meanwhile, the movie was solid. Giamatti was terrific.

Great movie, like I said the best actor was Dominic Sessa, the teenager. Can't believe this was his first major film.

This was excellent! I remember seeing the trailer for this in the theatres and thinking this was going to be more of a straight comedy but it’s a very emotional film in the latter half and especially towards the end. Got me in my feels haha.

Also Dominic Sessa was outstanding. I cannot believe this is his first role. Very curious to see what he does next!

Comcast (owner of Focus) loves that VOD money. They did this for Asteroid City which also was doing very well in theaters

  13. Remember when films like this were released in theaters roughly 16 times per year

Does anyone else find that their theaters aren't even using all their screens these days? The local 24-screen theater is using only half of its screens.

The auditoriums in my local Regal Theater have like 5 or 6 rows of maybe 15 or so seats. Real tiny, IMO.

1000% agree. Planning to go see it in theaters a second time. Holding off on buying until I get a physical copy.

I don't know why, this made me very happy to read. I don't think I've ever been excited enough about a movie or TV show that I couldn't wait to buy it and have a copy of my own. I envy that you feel that way.

To be honest I still buy physical media, just like to collect stuff I suppose. But this movie honestly is so great. I think it is honestly movie of the year for me, even though I haven’t seen every movie I wanted to. But I told my wife while leaving the theatre I couldn’t wait for a physical copy to watch every year around Christmas.

Saw this last night and really enjoyed it. All three leads killed it but Giamatti was doing something special. Already want to see it again.
