Anyone have any personal experience with humbucker sized p90s? Or know of any lesser known ones that rule?

I have one of these in the neck position of my Strat: Humbucker P90 Single Coil Pickups. The ones all the way down at the bottom of the page for $105 each. Here's a link to the site as it looks like there's no way to navigate around from that page: Vintage Vibe Guitar Pickups. Not gonna lie it looks the exact same as when I ordered from them in high school a cool 15 years ago :D

It's the best pickup I've ever personally used, so woody and thick but dirties up nicely. Could not tell you what magnets I went with, though. But in general I really couldn't recommend Pete more highly.

I was trying to describe myself to someone

I managed to snap up a cheap pedal train board and one spot, so a little project for my week off is to create a new board using pedals I built, since I have a drawer full of them which never get used. It's going to be a fuzzy mess, I suspect.

Classic Vibe Squier Jazzmaster just came in about an hour ago. I can't believe how nice it is!! Set up really well right out of the box, too - intonation is great and the action isn't waaay too high. Very pumped.

honestly haven’t talked much about it at all anywhere/to anyone for whatever reason but I adore the thing. it has such an awesome unplugged sound that I think whenever I track with it I am gonna end up mic’ing it as well as the amp. it’s got some electronic issues but probably nothing too major and I can’t complain too much given I got it for waaaay cheaper than I have seen it sell elsewhere (and I haven’t seen another that is totally original and intact as this one is, even to the point of it coming with the original case!)

it is! it’s a Greco 921, for reference. only like 3 or 4 vids on youtube of ppl playing one and of those only one is really any good. not much out there about it tho I had to really dig to figure out if the fretboard was actually brazilian rosewood or not. I wanna get the issues with the electronics worked out before I comment too much, but it def seems to have its own character separate from a strat, tho not super far off either.

you’re close to charlotte right? one of the guys from junior astronomers opened up a shop that predominantly works on vintage type stuff. they might be able to help ya out.

yeah, kings mountain currently, so about 45 mins from charlotte. I’m currently trying to determine where to take it/when/how I’m gonna tackle it, I somehow forgot about that shop tho so I appreciate you bringing it back to my attention bc that could be my best bet

oh btw if you ever get a chance to visit Guitar Wishes in Lincolnton, it’s well worth the trip (if you’re still in the clt area). prob my fav small/local shop I have ever been to and also where I got my rosewood neck strat.

Those are solid guitars. I actually really like those Indian laurel fretboards too. Especially when you oil it up a bit. I wish Fender would use that more instead of Pau Ferro.

Yeah the fretboard is dry as hell but otherwise I really like the neck. I bought it with the intent to upgrade a bunch but short of fretboard oil and either some kind of lube or tape to stop the trem arm from squeaking in its insert there's really nothing it absolutely needs. Squier build quality now seems right up with the Mexican Fenders of the 90s/00s if not maybe even a little better. Never played the pau ferro stuff but I've seen a lot of similar comments to yours online.

Letting you know I stopped into my local music store and jammed a newly setup JM Classic Vibe.

Today I totally just bought a Jazzmaster Classic Vibe neck with tuners from Stratosphere for a fun little JM build I got going on. Throwing it on a hardtail JM body with a DIY splatter paint job.

I still can't believe how much better the CV necks look and feel over the Fender MIM Pau Ferro Classic Player/Vintera series necks. I'm going to see if the nut is actually Bone on this one and if not, I'll probably swap it out. The Luthier/shop owner said they're real bone nuts on the 2020 CV models, but something in me says it's too good to be true haha. I MIGHT upgrade the tuners to some vintage style locking tuners, but the stock ones seemed pretty good.

Yesss, that rules. Feels like the nut on mine is real bone, it feels similar to the one in my tele. Never messed around with locking tuners myself, but fwiw the ones on this are among the parts I'm not even looking at upgrade options even for fun - they were sensitive enough that tuning was easy, and I've been playing with the trem all week and until I started playing around with dive bombs today I didn't even have to touch a tuner.

Little ashamed but the rhythm circuit is definitely going when I take it in for the pickup swap. Not sure if it's wired wrong on mine, but I'm getting the same sound but way better just by flipping to the neck pickup on the regular circuit and turning the tone knob down. I thought I'd be a man of culture and ~get~ it, but alas I do not. Gonna be a series switch and I'm still looking into whether there's anything interesting the rollers can be repurposed for.

Im sure the luthier would know more about it. FWIW, I almost always swap out switches and pickups on any “budget” guitars I’ve owned. It’s usually pretty easy and always makes a difference, IMO.

If you follow Mike Adams (Puisheen) on Instagram or YouTube, the dude is a master when it comes to working on and setting up Jazzmasters and Jaguars. He did a pretty in-depth review and set-up on the same guitar you have. He’s got a cool personality too, so he’s not boring to watch or pay attention to lol.

What do folks use for strings here? I pretty consistently use DR Pure Blues for my electrics, lately 11 gauge to try to build up some more resistance and get more tone. Acoustics I really don’t have a preference, though I put Elixirs on one of mine and they really do last forever as advertised, even though they suck to play.
