Started Witch King by Martha Wells last night.

 

Interested to see what you think. I've never read any of her stuff but this one in particular appeals to me a lot.

 

I like how it's started. This is my first fantasy novel I've read from her. Love her Murderbot series tho.

 

the Chain of Dogs did nothing to you?? What of Duiker?? Coltaine???? KRUPPE?????

 

The Chain of Dogs is definitely an excellently written section. Probably my favorite section of any of the books thus far and it’s really devastating. Duiker was my favorite of the characters, and I assume he’s not actually dead. Coltaine was pretty great, too. And I like Felisin. I’m just not emotionally connecting with any of it. So much of it feels like talking heads to me. It’s impressive how long and how in depth that are and yet I often feel like I never know what the setting actually is. Like reading a script at times.

I may actively hate Kruppe, but that could be how the audiobook narrates him.

 

Oh fuck, Demon in White just turned into Tenet. My brain can't think this way!

Okay, Demon In White was pretty great, ya'll were right. I'll catch up in time for next book.

When Riftwar gets into its deep lore and theology its fucking brilliant. It does not happen that often, 23 books in I can confirm, the series tends to focus on the more micro personal stories, but it delivers every time I learn something new.

Also a little side note I find interesting. The Gods are generally referred to as Controllers. I feel like the general words synonymous with Gods are Makers/Creators, or something similar

Finished Witch King. I loved it. Really hope there's more to come, but we'll see I guess.

Looking for some new fantasy to read. I've been off it for so long and this makes me want to read more. My sister suggested A Chorus of Dragons, so I'll give that series a shot.

 

Read The Fall and Of Blood & Fire in the last week and loved them. Also copped the Broken Binding edition. Looking forward to reading more

 

Me and @Garrett have some complicated feelings on A Chorus of Dragons and the last few books, but I think overall it's a good read, and would probably be better now that you can read without waiting between releases because there's some really overly complicated magic systems and...character identities, to be vague.

 

And maybe just read the Wikipedia summary of book four

open to other fantasy titles/series suggestions aside from Sanderson stuff (just not too keen rn) and fourth wing (TikTok kind of warned me away from that one).

Harsh. Now it’s making me reconsider starting the series. Not sure I want to jump into something with one book being so bad.

 

Haha, there is a very pretty specific reason. She definitely tries something, and I give her points for that, and I also think that it there are people it will appeal to. I wouldn't call it universally bad. I even struggle to call it bad, I don't think I'm as harsh on it as Garrett, though I totally get why he feels that way, I just didn't like it.

 

Gotcha. I’ll give the first book a try at least. Bought the kindle version like just before posting in here. Haha
