I've been told that it reads more linear and less like a history text book from book 2 on. I still need to read it, but book 1 jumped around a lot due to what it was trying to accomplish.

Earlier I was posting covertly under the desk at work during a TEAMS meeting, but I hadn't even realized the similarities, I just grabbed The Tainted Cup because someone in here tipped me off that Robert Jackson Bennett had a new book out and I had been unaware.

When I read Leafdust & Deadwood though I very much wanted to keep going in that world. I really can't wait for 4/19.

I need grimdark right now. Starting Eleventh Cycle, it looks like it should deliver on what I'm hoping for.

Nothing has quite hit Second Apocalypse levels for me in regards to grimdark.

This is going to be an extremely annoying question with so little context, but I'm having a hard time deciding for myself. Which of these do I want to read next?

    Wool
    Children of Time
    Red Rising

If you want finished - Children of Time
If you are okay with the last book not having a release date yet - Red Rising

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. Hard to say without know what you like as all 3 of those series are very different.

Definitely Children of Time. I didn't care for the other two, but even if if I did it would be Children of Time.

Idk if Children of Time is technically finished. I believe what you are saying 100% still stands, since every book comes with a pretty solid ending, so it's not like a cliffhanger series. But I did get the impression in the last book that there was more to come, especially with the tease of whoever created the device from book 3. I know when I was reading book 3 I assumed it was the last one since trilogies make sense, but I haven't seen anything that confirms that.

Thanks for weighing in, all! To give a little more context, I’m pretty new to sci fi books, although I’ve always been an avid reader and always loved sci-fi movies. For some reason, I always gravitated way more to fantasy and thriller/horror books.

This year, I’ve started reading more sci-fi and ended up with all three of these books after visiting a used book store a few months ago. I’m really eager to read all of them, so I was just looking for a potential consensus on which one might be enjoyed the most among the group since I can’t decided which one I’m most curious about myself.

Red Rising is just all gas and is a lot of fun overall, and might be an easier series to jump into.

with how prolific Tchaikovsky is, it's always possible he goes back.

Curious what you didn't care for in Red Rising. Did you read the full series? I know there's a good portion of people who don't continue after book 1. I think the quality goes up a lot from book 2 on, and feel the sequel series is even better.

No just the first one. I thought it was the annoying sort of YA that tries to be as edgy as possible, but still YA. Also seem to recall it all taking place at a school, which I've talked about disliking a lot in this thread. I didn't hate it, meant to give it another try at some point, but never felt compelled to pick up book 2.

Did a little digging and I guess after every book in that series he said he didn't intend on writing sequels, so my guess is that means it's just open for when the idea comes. It's at least not like the Final Architecture, a trilogy with a clear end.

That was exactly how I came into Sci-Fi! My first real love was the Hyperion series.

I remember reading the Silo trilogy about a decade ago and I really liked it a lot. I'm gonna be the odd man out and say go with Wool.

I can totally understand, it’s very much more adult from book 2 on and a lot better. Especially the last few. I think Pierce was a victim of getting his foot in the door and having an overbearing editor in book 1, especially since hunger games clones were running rampant. Dark Age is one of my favorite books ever

Yeah it’s a shame that book 1 isn’t super indicative of the rest of the series’ quality.

Well shit I guess that's reason enough to give book 2 a try. I don't have a sci fi series at the moment.

Totally not trying to sway you one way or the other but book 2 is his vision realized. If you’re even remotely interested that one I think will sell you or it won’t for the rest of the series.
