My personal least favorite is Thor: The Dark World. I didn't hate it, but it's the kind of movie where I'd only watch it again if there was nothing better on or if I was doing a rewatch of the whole MCU. I wouldn't actively rewatch it by itself. I feel the same about the first Thor and The Incredible Hulk.

I'm eager to see this movie just because I'm interested to see if it's really as bad as critics are making it out to be. Part of me feels like it can't possibly, but part of me acknowledges it definitely could, and it wouldn't take much.

I could articulate my thoughts more, but until I actually see the movie, all I'm really doing is talking out my ass. So I'll see the movie first, and then I'll complain about it.

 

Yepp. People always forget about this one but it’s so much worse than Thor 1 and 2.

 

the Thor movies made Idris Elba boring which is an unconscionable sin, and Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings too

 

this wasn't quite bad like some of the pans are saying it is, though it's roughly as flawed as they're saying. i'm stealing this quote from someone else*, but it's like a five course meal where you really like what you're eating, but the wait staff keeps taking your food away for the next thing before you can truly savoring what you having just before. and yes it's an undeniably refreshing change in pace from most of the others, but yet it's maybe the most an mcu has been hindered specifically by the standard marvel issues (you can probably guess which ones) in ages. cast mostly holds it down, with the weak link surprisingly being kumail, who's maybe slightly more enjoyable then when he was in fucking men in black: international

no less than decent to the point where it honestly doesn't deserve its (current) place in history as the lone non-fresh mcu film on rt. if the sensationalised reactions before now and later is what torpedoes zhao's career to any extent i'm dropping everyone into a volcano

ps: kumail being fully clothed for the whole film after his very-publicized workout regimen reminds me way too much about how dipshit shia labeouf supposedly got his chest tattooed for that david ayer film last year, and from what i heard he only doesn't have his shirt on for one very brief scene

 

I feel like Zhao’s career will be safe. At most, she may not direct any other MCU film, but an Academy winning director won’t be blocked away because of one disliked Marvel film.

I’d be more interested in a sequel now that a lot of the “who and what are Eternals” exposition is over with.

 

I feel like in order to rebound from this, Marvel is going to make a movie that is so generic and just like every other Marvel movie. Between bad critic reviews and right wingers review bombing it on IMDB, I don’t see this performing well.

 

With the next two being Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, I think they’ll bounce back easily if this doesn’t do well. Still excited to see it tonight cause I think there will be some really cool lore/world building with it.

Why are people already speaking in way past tense when this movie didn’t even come out yet?

 

It's eying around $75 - $80 opening weekend, which isn't bad. It would match Shang-Chi's opening. It will be interesting to see how good word-of-mouth is and I haven't seen any terrible fan reviews. If the general audience doesn't view it as harshly as critics then it can have a decent two-week run.

 

Spider-Man, Doctor Strange 2, Thor 4, Black Panther 2...

Marvel has a really good, and audience-friendly, lineup. NWH is done, Strange will keep Raimi's touch, Thor 4 will of course keep Waititi's touch, and I'm sure Marvel is giving a lot of creative decisions to Coogler due to the circumstance regarding the film.

If Marvel gets scared of trying something new we probably wouldn't see the results of it until Fantastic 4, and by that time enough films would have been released to bring their confidence back.

In summary, this film most likely won't affect anything other than an Eternals sequel, which given how this film ends, wouldn't be an exact sequel anyway.

 

Lol yeah Marvel has nothing but sequels to some heavy hitters coming out next, I think they will be just fine.

 

This thing’s got more pre-release post-mortem takes than an MCU-era Fox or Sony Marvel movie, lol.

 

I actually liked this quite a bit. All the characters were surprisingly interesting with the only exceptions being Ajak and Superma…I mean Ikaris. I also feel like I know the trajectory of this phase now a lot more. The only letdowns were the plot being a mess and the Celestial stuff which was a bummer because it was what I was most looking forward too. Overall definitely entertaining even if it won’t be one I go back to a ton and by no means the worst Marvel film.

 

This really wasn’t bad at all. It was just a lot. Felt kinda DC. for sure better than Thor 2 haha. Also kinda felt like they were setting up 10 different movies which is overwhelming.

 

Also, mentioning Superman in an MCU movie is reaaaaaaally fucking weird

Definitely a movie at war with the screenplay Zhao had to work with, but I dug it for what it was. Certainly the final nail in the coffin of Marvel Studios having new things of interest to offer me, unless the stars somehow align perfectly when we get the X-Men. But, hey, my three favorite Marvel Studios directors have sequels over the next couple years, so that’s cool.

I will say, if Marvel were to let Chloé Zhao develop another film from the ground up, I’d be intrigued, especially if it involved Harry Styles as Starfox. But, I don’t know how likely that is, and I do not wish another Marvel film on her (unless she gets to do some other stuff first), and I can’t imagine myself watching a follow up by someone else.

 

Not that we can discuss, I really want to see a film that covers the Starfox post-credit scene. That set up could be so much fun in a film that isn’t bogged down by exposition.

Actually, any film with the remaining Eternals would be a treat after this. The characters were great and there wasn’t one that I didn’t want to see more of. Zhao nailed the interpersonal relationships between some of the members.

The pacing was the knife in this film’s chest and while this story would have worked as a two-part film, I still enjoyed it from start to finish and would watch it over some other Marvel films.

 

Not enough people talking about Don Lee imo, total MVP of this thing. The stretch between his death and Harry Styles showing up just felt like a charisma black hole
