I still don’t understand how self titled doesn’t get the love it deserves in here. Infinite might be there best song... can’t imagine if this band didn’t come back.

I do really like it overall and infinite is unreal. In my top 3.. it may be the production.. like Color is a great song but it doesn't slam in like I wished it did for the first kick in. This being their return opening album song etc ... that aside, it is a really solid album.

part of me hopes they maybe throw 3 more tracks on this EP and make it an album. Why not? :-)

  5. It was badly produced and mixed and mastered and the songs were only ok. then they rebounded in a huge way.

I dislike self titled so much that I actually gave up on the band and stopped keeping up with them. I didn't listen to this album til long after it's came out because of that. Turns out this is their best album, who woulda thought.

The leap between self titled and Mother Nature is absolutely ridiculous

*for those who prob missed the first time i mentioned this*

i think i know (at least partly) why this album didnt sit well with most fans.

ok so check this, the whole self titled album was recorded at the scale of 432 hz. music on this side of the globe is usually played at 440 hz. that means the whole pitch of the album relatively exists in some weird in-between area of the musical spectrum. why would they record it like this you ask? cuz theres some hippie theory that it sounds more pleasing to the listener, they call it a "magic" frequency or something. imo it just confuses our brains and sounds no bueno.

with all that said, ive taken the liberty of pitch-shifting the whole album to where it should have been recorded at.

doing this has personally given new life to the album. i advise you to relisten and let me know if you agree.

I think This is War is my favourite song by them, honestly though it changes any time I listen to the EP or one of the first three albums.

Actually Of Confidence is probably my fave.

Self Titled is a very "first album back" kind of record. I really enjoyed it, but it was definitely quite "safe". For me I enjoyed all the first five and Infinite quite a lot, but I do concede Color doesn't seem like an opener.

I’m more of a first three tracks and last three tracks kinda guy for that album. When I get home and infinite are prolly my favs. I think the middle of the album is a slog to get through

Yeah Self Titled definitely loses me in the the middle. This is Life, Fire, and When I Get Home are jams.

Did you post this right before Mother Nature came out? Honestly I never heard self titled until I saw a 440Hz version was up for download and that's all I listened to. That might be why I love this album so much. Never really listened to to real version, although I did just order it on vinyl so we'll see if I find it sounding off.

I have no idea how to actually describe it, but when AJ gets really into his yelling/gruff vocals, I find that the songs... drag? Sound like a slog? Make my ears think they’re trying to listen to music covered in honey, while underwater? I don’t know how to put it, but I don’t love it.

So basically, I end up going back to the albums where he does more singing than shouting. And that means I much prefer and spend more time with these days RFTS, ST, and Mother Nature than War Paint and Golden Record. Which isn’t as much the songs themselves I don’t get as the vocal delivery. But it ends up totally coloring my perception of the songs.

AJ was on a podcast sometime after the reunion and if i remember right, he said most of the songs off GR were out of his range. The guitar player who will not be named, refused to change the key of songs. That, combined with the few years of constant touring, did not make for a great sounding vocal on GR. It's all subjective, but AJ's vocals on GR definitely sound like he's straining a bit and just.. wore out. That being said, Catholic Girls is still a banger.

  20. Most of Golden Record was tuned in E standard right? That was a noticeable change after hearing them play a step or a step and a half lower until then.

  21. Since we're talking about self-titled, here's what I pitched as possible layouts when I was working at Hopeless.

  22. Yeah, that is absolutely one part of it and a real issue, I also just don't feel like the songs are as strong even with the changes, however. They're more straightforward, less room to breathe, and feel like a band trying to regain their footing and figure what they wanna be now ... which, paid off in spades! Because the last album and the new single show that growth, letting the songs expand when needed, having more diversity in sounds, melody, and pace ... I respect the album for getting them to where they are now, I just don't think it's unfairly maligned, I think it's a clear bridge, but still just only any ok album.

  25. Thanks! Yeah, my coding skills are pretty limited, which is why I used Cargo Collective. I'm not exactly sure where it's broken and I'm not sure how it happened. I'll fix it eventually, but I've also been thinking about using another platform for my portfolio.

I'm not sure, they didn't really discuss a meaning behind it, but I'm sure it could be interpreted as that. I just know it was a mutual friend of the photographer and the band in a pool with lights at night. All the photos from that session were beautiful.
