This email cracked me up. I hope the vid is getting the response and views they are hoping for. It has been a bit quiet in here in response to the song/video

A very strange rollout for this album. Has it even been officially announced? Not sure what the strategy is here.

Wasn't the Mother Nature rollout similar? Where were you when the sky opened up and a video plus maybe one more song and a video then it dropped?

Nah, they announced the album and shared the art in like early April and the album didn't come out until mid-June. "Where Were You When the Sky Opened Up" did come out before the album was announced (February/March, I want to say) but the rollout didn't have this kind of withholding of information.

I feel like some bands are being intentionally vague because of the vinyl delays.

We reach for the longest shadow

I feel like this band is not one of those. They seem to intentionally not care about what makes sense from a marketing standpoint, because, “it’s all about the music, man”.

easily the band I like the most whose persona (at least from what I can see online) I like the least.

I think the timeline changed because they signed to the label.

I'll say that when I met the band after a show, they could not have been nicer and more down to earth. During the set they were asking who wanted to party with them after etc and honestly I have kids at home I have zero interest in a bender. But when I spoke with them they didn't bring that up at all, just chatted and asked questions and offered to have a photo. The crowd had been so small that I felt bad for them, there is no way they broke even on this show, but they were just super grateful to those of us who showed up and really humbled by the praise they received for a great performance.
Personally I don't care if they want to have a drink or take drugs as long as they remain great, genuine people.

I've met A.J twice and he was one of the least pretentious people I've met in the industry. Could not have been friendlier. I don't care if they have the drug references.

I don’t think it’s the references that rile people up. Now, I haven’t seen any of this in awhile, but there was a period where they would constantly post videos of drunken antics and drug use from what I recall. That definitely irked some people. It gave the impression of being out of control. But, like I said, I don’t really see that these days. But I feel like it was that stuff more than a lyrical reference.

Yea. They at least used to drink pretty heavily on stage

It's not up to any of us to judge what they choose to do in their free time, they are great and genuine people and they aren't harming anyone. I've personally partied with the band and do whenever they come to my city, and they are always stoked to hang and spread love, it is very civil. They aren't wild and out of control as much as it may seem - doing drugs isn't always a bad thing, certain substances can be very enlightening and helpful for an overall well-being when used appropriately: it's just a cultural stigma that they choose to defy and there is nothing wrong with that.

Anyone who eats sugar, drinks caffeine, alcohol, takes antidepressants or anxiety meds are taking drugs. Everyone does drugs, in some form or another and just because certain ones have been deemed illegal by the government and others have been accepted as okay doesn't mean its an accurate representation of their overall value in one's personal life.

The problem is that AJ and crew have influence over their fan base, the younger fans in particular, and as I said earlier, some of their posts made it seem like they were out of control at times. I get what you’re saying, but the younger fans are far less likely to be able to use any illegal substances in an appropriate manner as the band may or may not have done. They just see the excessive drinking and drug usage and don’t comprehend how to do so safely. I don’t think anyone is against the band making choices for themselves or drugs out right, but broadcasting such choices without context is not a good thing when you are in a position of influence and power over your fan base. I also think there is a difference in someone saying they party hard and their experience with it vs just posting a contextless video of the usage of it. The band should feel free to talk about what they do and be able to speak to their personal experience. That would still be defying the cultural stigma, but would remove the blank approval of getting super fucked up to their fans. Maybe you don’t see the difference, but it would give the band a much better image of not being out of control.

ultimately, the band can do whatever the fuck they want to. I’m just some concerned asshole. Or was, like i said earlier, I don’t really see them post stuff like that these days. There’s wrong with questioning those with influence, especially over young people.

Honestly bands from this scene have caused so much harm to young people that TDS posting some videos of drug use just doesn't even rate.

By no means is it the worse thing done by a band in the scene. But that doesn’t mean it should just be ignored. But honestly, I find it out that it popped up now because, as I’ve said many times now, it’s not really a thing they do anymore. Unless I somehow unfollowed their account. So, I don’t see it as a current issue.

I don’t have an issue with any references, drinking or open talk about drug use/partying as long as it doesn’t effect their ability to perform live. A vast majority of their fans are probably 25-35. They aren’t impressionable young kids and the drugs the band refers too aren’t bad if used in moderation. Let’s not act like there’s not tons of artists out there that do the same things in different ways. In a scene riddled with far worse problems, I’m not going to care about such fickle issues.

I'd even be okay if it affected their performances from time to time. They wouldn't be the first (or thousandth) band for whom that was the case.
For me, as long as they are good people and especially that they can balance their partying with being responsible to their families.
