For week 5 I checked out Beyond the Fleeting Gales by Crying at the recommendation of @marioeatworld. I will admit that if it weren't for wanting to give it a fair shake for this club, I wouldn't have come back to this after the first listen. Nothing much really stood out to me or caught my ear initially to make me want to return to the record. However, I'm glad I stuck with it for a few more listens because I eventually found plenty to appreciate here.

The main thing that stood out to me was how many different styles the band explores on the album. There's synth pop on the first track, "Premonitory Dream," and a handful of songs mine the same vulnerable territory as a lot of current popular indie pop and emo. But there are also moments when the band breaks out into heavy metal riffing/soloing ("Patriot") or the vocalist uses an almost rap style delivery ("There Was a Door"). Some of these experiments work better than others (in part because it seems to me that the vocalist is better suited to a softer sound), and though I thought the album was a bit disjointed at times the band has an endearing quality to their sound that kept me along for the ride.

Even though the hooks weren't immediate, there were parts that became infectious after repeat listens. Though I don't see myself going back to this one too often, I will definitely be checking out what Crying do next to see if they streamline their sound in one specific direction or continue with this unique and eclectic blend of styles.

 

Totally read this as "crying at the recommendation" and was totally intrigued by whatever gutting album was recommended!!

I’m having my morning coffee listening to the first album you gave me, Jeff Buckley - Grace.

I’m honestly blown away. I don’t know how I’ve never heard this whole album. I’ve only ever heard Hallelujah which I enjoyed, but the rest of this is just on another level. Last Goodbye is the instant standout to me, and is already a huge favorite for me. Lover You Should’ve Come Over is also just phenomenal. I feel like I’ll be hearing new things on this album each listen, and I’m so excited to continue listening to it. Vocally, he’s out of this world. I’ve been following along with the lyrics too, and it’s just incredible. I’m an idiot for not hearing this before and I’m very grateful you gave me this album. I can’t wait to check out the second album you gave me too.
