Taking Cassandra to the End of the World Party is a good litmus test if you'll like the album. It only gets crazier from there.

I’m excited to listen to both the albums I got more, for sure. I definitely sense that there’s more to that Vaux album especially than first listens could reveal. This week was just, unfortunately, a little hectic for me with work and stuff and most of my music listening being consumed by Glassjaw.

@WolvesAreCircling182 (the poster formerly known as @BTDandFeelingThis) and I exchanged three album recommendations this week. Here is my first write up for this session.

    Saint Asonia
    Saint Asonia
    2015

I have been familiar with Three Days Grace since the summer of 2003 when their debut album came out and they got a lot of radio play. I always thought they were pretty good for a "radio rock" type band. The vocals were pretty good and the musicianship, while not necessarily groundbreaking, was solid. I checked out their later releases and am familiar with most of their work. When I heard in early 2013 that Three Days Grace's lead singer, Adam Gontier, was leaving the band I figured it was only a matter of time until he was involved with a new project.

That brings us to Saint Asonia. The self-titled album that I was assigned is their debut (and to date only) full length album. They are considered to be a "supergroup" - Adam (formerly of Three Days Grace fame) is the lead vocalist and he is joined by Mike Mushok (guitarist in Staind), Corey Lowery (bassist, formerly in Stereomud and several other groups), and their drummer Sal Giancarelli (previously in Staind, but not on any of their studio releases). Just as a quick side note, Sal Giancarelli joined the band in 2017 and did not play on their studio release (their drummer from 2015-2017 was Rich Beddoe, who is not famous enough to have his own Wikipedia page).

I thought the album was good. To be quite honest, if I didn't know that I was listening to Saint Asonia, I would have thought that I was listening to a new Three Days Grace album. Adam's vocals (to me at least) sound pretty much identical to his vocals when he was in Three Days Grace. The style of music is pretty much the same too. There are a couple quieter songs, but for the most part the songs are louder with quite a bit of guitar.

My favorite tracks were Better Place, Blow Me Wide Open, Let Me Live My Life, and Dying Slowly. The two songs on this album that were released as singles were Better Place and Let Me Live My Life, so in my opinion I think they made a wise decision on their picks for singles.

Overall, this is a well done album for this genre. If you are a Three Days Grace fan and have never heard this album, I strongly recommend checking it out. On the flip side, if you do not like Three Days Grace, you will most likely not like this album!

Record one I listened to for @Mary V

Holy Holy- When The Storms Would Come

This was a band I'd never even heard of. This was such an incredible, and at times beautiful record. I heard strong influences from Death Cab For Cutie, and some sporadic influences from Oasis during some of the songs. I loved this record so much that I am about to press play on their new record from this year, Paint. I would definitely recommend this album to anyone! Wasn't a single song on it I didn't love. My favorites were: "A Heroine", "If I Were You" , "You Cannot Call For Love Like A Dog", and "Pretty Strays For Hopeless Lovers" Thanks for a great first recommendation @Mary V ! Excited to listen to the second recommendation soon!

A little late but @nohandstoholdonto and I got our recs finalized

    She will be listening to:
A Flock of Dimes - If You See Me, Say Yes
    Inside//Outside - Inside//Outside

And I will be listening to:
    Cheem - Downhill
    The Internet - Ego Death

We also each gave each other bonus albums to check out if we're feeling ambitious this week haha

  10. I'm soooo happy you loved it! They deserve all the recognition overseas. Paint is also a fantastic album, I just feel that their debut is more layered and tender and it's a great place to start if you've never listened to them. Paint is also poppier, inspired by new wave. Great band

Paint had a few songs(I referenced in Movielife thread) that seem heavily influenced by The War On Drugs!

  12. That's fantastic! They started really strong. This is their debut single:

  13. So glad you enjoyed these! It's really cool getting someone else's take on some of your favorite records.

I think "style over substance" is a valid criticism of the UTIOG record. I see it as more of a party album than anything that you can draw deep meaning from. Fun fact - not sure if you looked into the band at all, but the lead singer formed AWOLNATION after they broke up. Kind of hard to believe it's the same guy, but you can definitely hear the distinct voice if you are familiar with it. He's a talented guy and I'm super glad he finally found success, though selfishly I would have preferred if it was with UTIOG.

I had a long drive today and put that Vaux record on. Kind of forgot how hard it hits when it's cranked up. I agree that it's a pretty dense, layered record (and kind of long at that). It's a grower for sure. I think The Rope... might be my favorite track, though I've had Need to Get By stuck in my head for like a week.

Listened to TITLTET a few more times this week. So good!

@EmmanuelSCastle yo, why tha fuck did Lauryn Hill drop a banger of an album and then never do another one again tho? Next year it’ll be twenty years since Miseducation. Time for a Pt. II

    Damn. She’s so talented :verysad:

I just quick read up on her wiki. Seems it’s been kind of a struggle since Miseducation. You know if she put out a new album it’d do well though.

    Trusted

idk if this is true or not and don't know a ton about her in general but someone told me when they first showed me the album that she played some new shit after it came out and people didn't like it or smth. I don't know if that's the only factor there, but if it is that is some crippling perfectionism.

yeah I hear about how all her shows are a toss up and always wonder if it's a mental health thing like anxiety or if she's just a huge Morrissey fan

I actually just found out yesterday by reading YouTube comments that he’s from AWOLNATION. Very interesting, tho I never really listened to that band tbh, just know they’re popular. It’s def a fun record though and, at the very least, I see the three highlights I mentioned being ones I frequently listen to in the future.

I’m really excited to give BV, BV more listens, I felt like I was just barely scratching the surface with it.

:’) so so so awesome to know it’s stuck with you.
