Now I Know This World Isn’t Spinning Just For Me Prestigious

You’re in. You two are now partners for this session. Sometime this weekend, DM eachother and discuss two albums to trade each. Let us know when you’ve decided what they are, and then post your thoughts when you’ve listened to the albums. Simple!

I was debating between assigning Full Collapse or War All The Time. Really can’t go wrong either way!

This is all I wanted to hear! I think you’ll dig em if you liked Act II. One of my favorite parts of the later Acts is hearing motifs that were found on their earlier records. For some reason I thought you’d dig Scarlet a lot more than TDH but I’m just glad you enjoyed any of it haha.

Ok, so one of the albums I was tasked with listening to was Very Fast Very Dangerous by Rueben. This is a really interesting album because it manages to simultaneously have things I hate and things I totally love so it’s been hard for me to gauge it haha. I’m not going to do a track by track breakdown, but A Kick in the Mouth starts off the album strong with a really poppy drum beat juxtapositioned with a guttural bass line that instantly made me feel like I should out on the town getting drunk and maybe in a fight or two haha. Then the chorus comes in and absolutely kills the song for me, taking it down several notches. That seems to be the prevailing issue I have with this album. I feel that the majority of the tracks have a really strong verse, or a really strong chorus, but hardly ever both. For example, I despise the verse on It’s All About Control, but there is break at about the 1:00 mark that is absolutely fucking fantastic and is strong enough for me to return to that song multiple times. However, sometimes it feels that it’s those parts that the tracks are written around and the rest is just suplimentary. Lastly, I wanted to comment on the vocals. Initially, I was very thrown off by them, but I do think over time I came to the conclusion that they are probably just right for this sound, and I fucking LOVE when that dude screams. His screaming vocals are so good and they really shine on Blamethrower. Despite some negative qualities I mentioned, there is enough good stuff, and even great, stuff on here that I will definitely keep it in my library.

RIYL: AITA era Thrice, O’Brother (mainly for some of that dirty bass tone and some grunge feel), Dropkick Murphys, and getting in fights at bars.

Also, the first track really reminds me of a heavy take on a Franz Ferdinand song, which I like.

The second album I listened to was Heaven or Last Vegas by Cocteau Twins. I don’t have nearly as much to say about this album, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. After hearing the first track, I thought, “ok it's like Beach House if they were in the 90’s” and while those similarities ended up only popping up from time to time, I would not be surprised if Beach House was heavily influenced by this band/album. Overall, if I had to pick a word to describe this album, it would be “pleasant.” It’s something I could see myself throwing on in the background at a party. While most of these tracks I just casually enjoyed, I will say that Frou-Frou In Midsummer Fires is an absolute fucking jam. That chorus is so damn good. The combination of her main vocal part with the falsetto wailing in the background in conjunction with the whole band coming in...HNNNGG. Takes me to an ethereal plane.

RIYL: Beach House, Still Corners, dream pop

Gotta disagree. I still like ZABA but I prefer HTBAHB because it has more variety and stronger writing

    Agree to disagree.

I agree it has more variety, but ultimately I find it to be a bit more scattered in quality.
