    Laura Veirs - The Lookout

The Lookout is a solo effort from Laura Veirs that combines folk/country/and singer songwriter influences. The album uses a lot of gently plucked guitars with a lot of country elements such as sliding electric guitars and folk song structures. One thing that stuck out to me about this album was the use of non traditional song structures. I found that to add a different/fresh element in this style that I wasn't as used to. My favorite song on this record was heavy petals, a beautiful ballad that felt very nostalgic.

thanks to @Nate_Johnson for recommending this to me! It felt good to push outside of my comfort zone!

Hawthorne Heights- Bad Frequencies (April 27, 2018)

So @JediMasterKevo182 and I traded on the side, this album for the best Used album Artwork so he can see the light finally.

This was my first Hawthorne Heights album, having only heard the 2015 EP Hurt, which I thought was ok but better than expected.

This album starts out with maybe it's two poppiest tracks. Nothing really stood out on those but they were catchy. If the album stayed on that course, I would have zoned out but on the third track, Crimson Sand, they change it up a bit and have a slightly harder sound and the guitars start to stand out a bit more.

At this point the album picked up for me and was a good mix of catchy pop rock with a little aggression mixing in each track to keep it interesting. Of course I'll have to listen more to pick out specifics, but overall it was a good listen which got better as the album went along through all 13 tracks.

Highlights (aka my 4 favorites) - Push Me Away, Crimson Sand, Starlighter, The Perfect Way to Fall Apart

Discovered this band after checking out some of the bands that are opening for Hawthorne Heights. They released an album this year and it’s a nice mix of indie rock/Americana.

Just popping in to say this was a great read, love that other people love this album as much as I do.

Also, found out from going to their show last week that Otis is about the singer’s grandpa, who is also the person on the cover of the album.

I’m paired with @Colin Your Enthusiasm

He’s giving me alexisonfire - crisis

    And I’m giving him

Armor for sleep - what to do when you are dead

We are doing one album each with the rule that we each have to play the album 3 times. If it is made known that one of us breaks this rule than the person is allowed to assign a new album which will then be required to play 3 times.. this will go on until each party as listened to a selection 3 times.

So @Larry David gave me 2 albums to review this week. As has been a current theme with my reviews recently I again haven't had a huge deal of time to listen to these, between being extremely busy at work with server migrations and finding most of my spare listening time consumed by the new A Perfect Circle album. So because of this both my reviews are going to be fairly short this week.

Spanish Love Songs - Schmaltz (2018)

I had heard this bands last album but I'd never got fully into this band. I think I'd discovered them through Spotify rec'ing one of their songs last year. So I was pleased to see @Larry David had rec'd me this.

I know this album has been reviewed a couple of times recently so I'm not going to go in too deep with the sound. I'll just say that on the 2 listens I've given this so far this album is a huge step up from their last album imo and it has that Menzingers punk rock sound nailed. There's hooks all over this album that will get stuck in your head for days like "would you meet me in the middle, would you meet me north of Buffalo" in the chorus of Buffalo Buffalo.

Basically I can tell this album is really great and I need to spend more time with it to fully appreciate it. It's the type of punk rock that I love and it's great to see this band come on leaps and bounds from their last album. I'll definitely be spending more time with this over the next few months. I can see it being a really good album once the sun finally comes out in this grey country I call home.

RIYL: Earnest Punk Rock like The Menzingers, Nothington and Red City Radio
Favourite Tracks: Buffalo Buffalo, Joana in Five Acts, The Boy Considers His Haircut

    Cory Branan - Mutt (2012)

This was the second album @Larry David gave me and it's a alt-country album by singer-songwriter Cory Branan, who I wasn't familiar with.

I enjoyed this album too but it was definitely less instant than Spanish Love Songs. The album reminded quite a bit of bands like Lucero, Two Car Garage and Ben Nichols solo material. Cory has that sort of whiskey soaked Southern accent going on. The songs on this album range from sombre quiet numbers like The Corner, Darken My Door and There There Little Heartbreaker, to straight up rock an roll numbers like Survivor Blues, Bad Man and Karen's Song.

So I liked this album from the couple of listens I gave this but I've nowhere near given this album the time it deserves to get fully invested into this. I'll make sure I go back to this to see if it grows on me some more.

RIYL: Ben Nicholls, Lucero, that whole southern alt-country sound.
Favourite Tracks: Yesterday, Karen's Song, The Freefall (that 3 track run is really great)

So thanks for your great rec's this week @Larry David I just wish I had some more time to really do them both justice.

Also that album art for Mutt isn't censored on Spotify which I only noticed when I left my phone on desk while listening to this at work. Only to come back and see some tits staring at me when I got back to my desk, luckily I don't think anyone else noticed it lol.
