@cshadows2887 gave me Springsteen's Born to Run and I gave him Story of the Year's In The Wake of Determination!

 

Both amazing albums that I listen to regularly

Haha nope! After listening a few times for my write up, I knew the song but never knew it was him, but most of the album was new to me. Out of all the classic rock artists I got into as kid, he fell through the cracks.

 

I am not going to lie, it's impressive that you've gone without hearing something of his, and that you didn't even know that the title track was him!

 

I live to impress

He was def on my list of "I know I should know this, but...."

 

So every SotY album has been recommended now!

 

Damn I wish I could experience Vheissu for the first time again. My 2nd favourite album ever!

 

Has Page and the Constant been recommended? I need to see those reviews. I'm looking forward to the Black Swan review, album is so good.

I've seen enough Wolves write ups to know its "not as good as their other stuff, but still ok. Needs more bangers and solos on it"

I have recommended the Constant at one point in the beginning, and I'm pretty sure Page has been recommended once. Wake was the only one that hadn't been recommended yet.

The record I was assigned this week by @Michael Schmidt was Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit- The Nashville Sound. This is a record I’ve been meaning to check out for some time. I know there was a TON of hype around the record when it was released. I remember enjoying his performance when he was a guest on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah as well, and having that be another reminder I should check out the reason. For whatever reason, it was a record that slipped my mind, but I’m so glad that this was recommended to me so it forced my hand to listen to it.

Within the first minute of the record, I was thinking to myself “how did it take me so long to listen to this?” It starts off with an acoustic track “Last Of My Kind” which instantly reminded me of one of my favorite solo artists, Cory Branan. This is a compliment of the highest kind as Cory has dominated my listening for the past 5+ years. The song “White Man’s World” was a surprisingly woke country song, which I never thought I’d say in a sentence with truly honest, aware lyrics like:

“I think the man upstairs must'a took a vacation. I still have faith, but I don't know why”

It was one of the highlights of the record. Another song I really enjoy based on the same reasoning as “Last Of My Kind” was the stripped down “If We Were Vampires” The peak of the record both musically and lyrically for me was “Anxiety” The lyrics were personal, gut wrenching, and extremely relatable.

“Even with my lover sleeping close to me
I'm wide awake and I'm in pain”

“Wife and child still sleeping deep enough to dream
And oh, I'm a lucky man today
But so afraid that time will take it all from me”

Those lyrics hit closer to home than I am proud to admit. The song ends with an epic minute-minute and a half musical outro. It’s as heavy as the lyrical content of the song, and it’s hard to believe that the song totals almost 7 minutes in length.

My only complaint with the record, is as heavy, relatable, and aware as the lyrics were throughout the record, the last song “Something To Love” seemed like pretty cliché song both musically and lyrically for the genre. While there were some personal moments in his reflective closer, I feel like the song has been written before. I do feel bad saying that though knowing it’s clearly a song written by a father to his daughter.

This was a near perfect record, that I can’t wait to listen to repeatedly. I clearly need to check out the rest of his music, as he’s one hell of a songwriter.

Fuck yes! I agree with Anxiety and most of your comments here. Closer is my least favorite as well. Anxiety and Tupelo are probably my two favorites. Glad you checked it out so quickly and dug it. I’m big into sad singer songwriter stuff. Him and John Moreland have fantastic catalogs to dig into.

 

Jack's Mannequin has continued to grow on me by the way, really well written and memorable.
