Diva has one of my all time favourite songs on it in Why. That song wrecks me every time I hear it.

Alright, I have been busy and need to catch up on my reviews.

@JRGComedy recommended me J. Roddy Waldston & the Business with their album Destroyers of the Soft Life. I was told it kind of compares to White Reaper and after a few listens I sort of see that viewpoint. Where I think White Reaper might pull more from ‘80s arena rock or Cheap Trick, I think this album pulls more from the ‘70s.

The vocals took some time for me to get into, but this was a really fun record that does a throwback sound really well. I will definitely be coming back to this record.

@nickyeatworld gave me Fightstar’s album Someday Son This Will All Be Yours. This was a band I was familiar with, but have never actually heard. I saw them talked about on AP a good deal, but never dig in myself.

I was happy to finally listen, but I what I thought I was getting versus what I heard were a little off. I was expecting more TBS emo/pop punk/alternative and got a pretty clear active rock album. Some of the music could compare to Anberlin at times and some of the vocals reminded me of Armor For Sleep. Some of the heavy screamed parts were cool, but overall, the sound wasn’t really clicking with me. I can see how fans of that early to mid 2000s scene got into this band, especially if you dug some of the active/radio rock bands. Fun to listen to regardless. Thank you for expanding my horizons!

Lastly, @sophos34 gave me Darkest Hour’s album, Deliver Us. This is band that I am pretty familiar with, but mostly some of their early records. I’m well aware of their pedigree as metal band greatly influenced metalcore, but also bridged some of death metal fans as well.

This set of songs was interesting to me to hear it in context of where the metalcore genre was in 2007 and where it is today. This record is a banger. It’s heavy, but has an underlying catchiness to it. A lot of where metalcore moves following 2007 can be heard on this album. This album is ahead of its time in that respect. Some of the song structures and overall sound reminds of bands that came out more in the early 2010’s.

This was a fun recommendation and an album I can definitely see myself coming back to. Thank you!

    Teenage Wrist: Chrome Neon Jesus

I was told that this album had some 90s influences and was somewhat similar to Pianos Become the Teeth, Black Foxxes, and Brand New. Even though I'm not familiar with those bands' music (so I can't vouch for this being true), I did hear the 90s influences and greatly enjoyed that aspect of the album!

The instrumentation was really good - I heard a lot of awesome guitar (distortion especially) and drum parts. The style of the guitar is what really gave me 90s vibes for the most part.

I didn't really pick up on a lot of the lyrics yet, so I can't speak to that aspect of the album. However, I really enjoyed the melodies - a lot of these songs were very catchy! The vocals were very good too - I got a Third Eye Blind vibe a lot of times, which was cool.

I can't really think of anything to say in terms of a critique for this album - essentially, it was an interesting and really enjoyable listen. It didn't grab me right away, but it wasn't off-putting at the beginning either.

The title track is the opener, which starts out pretty tame, until the guitars and drums join in for a really powerful verse. It has some pretty cool distortion, too. "Dweeb" followed the title track with a really strong bass line and an infectious chorus. The bridge reminded me of some Jimmy Eat World guitar work in places, which was cool. "Swallow" really reminds me of something, but I just can't place it. It's much calmer than the first two tracks, and has yet another really catchy melody. "Stoned, Alone" has some awesome guitar work that reminds me of both Tonic (my favorite band) and Jimmy Eat World (among my favorites as well), which was really cool to hear! The next track, "Supermachine," starts out a bit calmer again, but it has a really catchy chorus. "Black Flamingo" is another track that has a really infectious chorus, and the melody and some of the vocal styling reminds me of Jimmy Eat World (that's probably why I find it so catchy). It also has some cool parts where it makes good use of dynamics, getting quieter for a short while. I've always enjoyed that effect when it's done well. "Kibo" has a similar dynamic effect. It starts out quiet and then builds, like a speaker is approaching you. It's a nice little track (the shortest of all) that really shows off the great guitar work on this album. This is especially true since it is nearly instrumental with so few lyrics. "Rollerblades" starts off with a cool Tonic-esque guitar riff and some really big, strong drums. The bridge also reminds me of Tonic, with all the distortion. The vocals/delivery/melodies kind of remind me of Avion (Steve Bertrand) in this track, too. "Daylight" is another catchy track with great guitars in the bridge. "Spit" starts off very calm and doesn't pick up too much, even during the chorus. It's a really big change of pace, but it certainly doesn't wear out its welcome. "Waitress" explodes out of the distorted ending of the previous track with huge drums and guitars - it serves as an excellent closer to the album.

    Verdict: 10/10

Favorite tracks: Dweeb, "Stoned, Alone," Supermachine, Black Flamingo, Kibo, Rollerblades, Waitress (yes, over half the album)

Reminds me of: Third Eye Blind, Jimmy Eat World, Tonic, Avion

(Thanks for sharing a great album, Bachna! It's not an album I would have tried out on my own, and I'm very glad to have heard it!)
