I’m surprised @Larry David hasn’t heard the Northstar album!

I enjoyed So They Say. Saw them once with Halifax, June, and The Classic Crime and it was pretty great!

Right so for my first week of this I was paired up with @BTDandFeelingThis and he gave me Starset's album Vessels and Northstar's album Pollyanna.

    Startset - Vessels (2017)

So I'd never heard of this band before and had no idea what to expect with this one. After a quick bit of googling before listening to this I found out that they were a rock band that try to bring in a whole load of other influences into their sound. I also saw that they'd had somewhat success on the radio out in the States too.

Overall I thought this album was pretty good, they seem to blend that kind of 30 Seconds To Mars radio rock sound and electronics pretty well together and in places bringing in heavier influences too. At first this album didn't really click with me but after a few listens I did find I kept going back to it and enjoying it a lot more. I feel this band really shines when they choose to focus on the radio rock end of their music and focus on the huge choruses like they do in Ricochet and Satellite.

The only gripe I had with this album that it's just a bit too long (it clocks in at 1hr10min) and tends to lag a little in the middle.

I'd say the stand out tracks for me were Ricochet, Frequency and Everglow. I'll definitely revisit this album again and I'll keep an eye out to see what this band does with their next album as I did enjoy this.

    Northstar - Pollyanna (2004)

So unlike Startset I was familiar with this band but for some reason or another I'd never got round to checking them out back in the day. For anyone that doesn’t know Northstar were around in the early 00’s and play emo in the style of bands that were around that time.

Now this album was much more instantaneous with me and I loved it straight off the bat. All I could think of on my first listen was why oh why did I not check this band out sooner.

Just everything about this album I love, this band seem to manage to find that perfect blend for me that incorporates 90’s emo guitar sound, 00's punk rock and the 00’s emo vocal melodies. To me it sounds like they were heavily influenced by the scene which they were playing with back then, throughout this album I kept being reminded of bands from that scene. In particular though I kept hearing early Taking Back Sunday influences on it especially when it comes to Nicks singing style on tracks like For Members Only and Like AM Radio.

This album was great start to finish, I loved it all and I’ll definitely be going back to this a lot. My favourite songs on it were American Dream, The Pornographers Dream, Accident Underwater and Rocket City.

Anyways thanks Kevin for some great recs for my first week here and for helping me get started in here :-)

This makes me happy to hear!!!

If they’re ever live in your area I recommend checking them out. I’ve heard from many sources including @bachna84 (see his concert review of them a couple pages back) that they’re quite unique and a sight to see live

  17. iCarly Rae Jepsen

    run away with me Platinum

okay this week @Joe4th gave me Threads by Now Now
I like Cacie's voice a lot and like that some of the songs were synthpop and some were more atmospheric

Prehistoric, Lucie,Dead Oaks,Wolf, School Friend and Magnet are some songs that stood out on first listen
Thread musically sounded like The Cure to me which is always cool

Memories are nice, but that's all they are. Prestigious

I'm glad you liked it, they're one of my favorite bands for sure. They get a little more pop-sounding on their latest two singles, Yours & SGL, you might like those too.

The Ben Folds Five album you gave me is a really fun listen. I really enjoyed Brick and Selfless, Cold & Composed. The whole album was extremely good, which makes sense because I'm a sucker for pianos in bands. The production is a little rough around the edges, but with how catchy and fun a lot of these songs are it still ended up working for it. I'll definitely be checking out more from him now that I finally had a starting point!

@thenewmatthewperry recommended I listen to Dream Wife - Dream Wife

When I saw the band's picture on spotify I was like okay they look cool af and it's shallow but I knew I'd love it from that alone lol. Like these are my ppl. Then I saw the first song was called Let's Make Out and I was like ok I'm definitely gonna love this and this speaks to me. I really enjoyed the combined sound of punk rock and the early mid 00s alt rock influences that I picked up on. Lyrics are great as well. "I am not my body, I am somebody " was made for chanting over and over. It was fast-paced and super fun to listen to! I'll def keep an eye on them in the future cause they're doing some rly cool things!

Alright, I'm a little late for my review of @bree1981's rec.

I... didn't really like this album. But I did find some things to enjoy in it and honestly a hope for the future of the band! Right off the bat the singer annihilates his vocal chords. Dude seriously has some power. He isn't always on key or in tune, but he is impassioned and can play to the back of the room. I liked the Menzingers reference in the first verse of "Vermont." Singer sounds a lot like Greg, actually. And that's how I feel about the future of the band. While I may not have liked this release a whole lot, I think that if the band can lock in some better production and a few more hooks on their next release, it'll be a release to watch out for! I also feel like they may translate a little better live and since I'm in the same city they are from, I'm going to try and make it to a show!

And @jorbjorb rec'd me the next one:

Spraynard stuck with me a little more immediately. The melody in the opening track is seriously catchy and the lyrics are just weird enough to not connect with a big audience. I can see why a lot of people on Chorus like them! This is my first Spraynard album and I was impressed with the playing on this album. The drummer especially is better than the average drummer in the genre.
I noticed a lot of references to being buried, things being under a house, being under the floor, etc. I have no explanation, but they are there. Again, I think Spraynard would be a fun band to see live! Some of this album reminded me a bit of Joyce Manor's newest album (not sure if that came out first or if this did).

P.S. "Home" is a cool track. Unique, fun structure and a cool way to end the album.

    Thanks for the recs!
