I used this podcast as my rules for the last two rounds. One Hit Thunder

I’m pretty certain they don’t count a second hit unless it was top 20 in the US? So, by that metric, something like “1,2,3,4” by Plain White Ts would NOT be a second hit despite being 2x platinum because it only hit #34 on the Hot 100.

Helena Beat was actually my pick for this prompt in my work league, great song

  3. Do you mean, like, at the time? Because The Lonesome Crowded West is like one of the most-revered indie albums of all-time lol and their popularity only grew from there. I think their popularity just happened to peak (and plateau for at least another album) with "Float On."

Every single rock band I like falls into either “influenced by Lonesome Crowded West” or “influenced by Pinkerton” and there is very little, if any, exception to this rule.

All I know is that I met with a friend at a bar last night and when he mentioned that Jimmy was playing tonight, a completely random person next to us shouts from the top of his lungs “IF YOU’RE LISTENING WAAAAOOOOOAAOOAH” like we had activated a sleeper agent

That’s kind of my argument exactly, tbh. Way more people are at a Modest Mouse or Weezer show now to see “Float On” or “Beverly Hills” over “Heart Cooks Brain” and “El Scorcho.”

Ocean Breathes Salty, their only other gasp at a hit, didn’t even crack the hot 100, so even though The Moon & Antarctica sold 500,000 copies, I still consider that band to have a single hit song.

I should note that although the term one hit wonder has a negative connotation to it, I don’t think it should. I would kill to sell 500,000 copies of an album or have a single hit haha

Dashboard charted higher than float on on the hot 100 charts.

Whoa. Just listened and I don’t think I’ve ever heard that song in my life haha.

But! That is very interesting and would never have guessed that :crylaugh:

Fun Modest Mouse fact: the guy who makes Isaac’s custom guitars is from my hometown

  15. Dashboard did chart higher than Float On on the US chart, but lower or not even at all on every other one - including other US charts like Alt and Pop. Float On is also rated 5x Platinum and Dashboard has nothing under its belt

  18. I think this is somewhat accurate for Weezer, who notoriously only play greatest hits or full albums for anniversaries, but Modest Mouse is SO much more of an Albums band (for lack of a better term), I really don't think most people are going to an MM show just because the know "Float On."

I’ve seen modest mouse maybe 6 times now and 5 of those times the crowd was awesome and fully into the show and 1 time like 35% of the crowd left after they played float on and that show was in like 2021 or 2022. It was weird!

    That is weird!

Unrelated to the people in the audience, the only time I’ve seen MM live was one of the worst sets I’ve ever seen and we left early. It was in summer 2022.

I’ve heard people say they’ve seen bad sets from MM. It’s probably cause they’re a top 3 band for me but I’ve always thought they’ve sounded great.

It was at a festival so I don’t wanna rag on them too much, but they were the headliner

The real argument we should be having is about Do You Want To by Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand only have that one song that is just as bouncy and bad as Float On is, I think they might be the same song
