I'm talking about directing, so anything Miyazaki directed is Ghibli and anything Takahata directed isn't. That's what's stupid since they both created Ghibli. Grave of the Fireflies was the third film they ever released.

So the entire point is that you shouldn't be saying dumb shit like Grave of the Fireflies isn't "true" Ghibli and you should just say you only care about the movies Miyazaki directed.

Miyazaki himself would say that “Ghibli is just a dumb name I came up with”

It’s a studio that is most closely associated with Miyazaki but other directors (like Takahata) have thrived releasing films through that studio

In fact I’m pretty sure animators split time between Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro so they wouldn’t be too bummed out

I mean it’s my own preference over what I receive and enjoy from Ghibli, so I pretty much can say it if I want to

mate you can say what you want, I'm just explaining why people are saying it's dumb.

It’s good. A collab between Ghibli and a few French studios. Pretty charming in its own right, which is impressive considering there is zero dialogue.

Better question: what’s the best ghibli film and why is it Kiki’s Delivery Service?

I want to really emphasize how amazing this movie is. The care and attention given to a teenage girl, how seriously and how carefully it takes her problems, it blows me away every time I watch it, and we watch it a lot in my house because my three year old also loves it. It’s basically a novel. Also, I want to live in the city she moves to.

Agreed. I also think it has one of the best music scores out of the Ghibli catalog.

I tried showing my daughter Arrietty today but that scene where the crow crashes into the window was just too scary for her lol

Kiki’s Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro are quiet time staples in this house. I love how compelling these movies are without having to rely on the typical hero/antagonist formula.

It’s not even animated but y’all have to watch the film Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives. Weerasethakul captures an understated Ghibli vibe mixed with the surrealism of a David Lynch flick. I mean, it’s hella meditative and profound, so not for everyone (intentionally slow and hypnotic) but it’s like poetry for those into that sort of thing. One of my favorites of all-time.

Okay, I have a lot of travel coming up so I’ve got time to watch a bunch of Miyazaki. Which ones do you all recommend I start with?

Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Totoro, Nausicaa. That’s foundational Miyazaki.
