Seeing the dubbed version tomorrow just because that’s the more convenient time; I’ll def watch subs at some point, probably in the theater if I love it.

Cool, gray rainy Sunday morning stoned with a beer (yes, I have a problem) and breakfast sandwich in a packed room — this should be good.

gonna try to see subtitled in the theater and then watch dubbed when it eventually gets on max just to hear pattinson

Expected more but I’m going to give a rewatch in subtitles. Pattinson was definitely great and Bale was definitely bad.

Bale didn't bother me because no one could make me like that guy haha, I know marrying your dead wife's sister is traditional

Really great film. I didn’t mind Bale. Pattinson went far and above that I forgot it was him while watching. I was kind of confused with some of the characters roles, but overall I enjoyed it. Not my favorite Ghibli film, but it’s up in the top 5.

The Blank Check episode on this is good.

Enjoyed this quite a lot. Christian Bale's accent really threw me off but otherwise loved the dub cast. Animation is as good as ever.

This was captivating and inventive in a way I wasn't expecting. It was also my first Miyazaki film so that probably played a role.

It's a beautiful look at the cycle of life and death and the grief that comes with that, especially when death comes seemingly outside that natural cycle. I love how it explores the beauty and horror of life cycles and the nuances both possess. There's beauty when the wawaru (spelling?) float to the sky to become new life, then horror at the pelicans feasting on them. But we come to understand that the pelicans are doing this only for their own survival. The parakeets are grotesque monsters inside the fantasy realm but then become peaceful beautiful creatures on the outside.

There are also ruminations on legacy and wanting the next generation to do right by what you've created, but at the same time, the film asks if the next generation should have to be responsible for upholding our creations or if is it better that our institutions eventually come to an end.

Quite a bit to unpack. I'll also be trying to watch more Miyazaki soon. I believe there's a ton of them on Max right so I'll start there.

Was going to see this tonight, but I think I want to see the Japanese, subtitled version first. The theater showing it is only available tomorrow

Oh you’re in for a treat. Miyazaki is one of the best living directors and probably The Best animator currently. I can’t imagine how it feels to watch his stuff for the first time (especially as an adult). Enjoy!

I watch anime shows in sub, but Miyazaki usually has a good cast of actors I like doing voices, so I do dubbed for his films.

Miyazaki has such great dubs I've never watched a sub. Is this a mistake? Not sure where I stand on this.

Sub vs dub debate is for nerds. Also worth it for RPat being a total goblin in this movie

I liked this, not really sure what the heck most of it really meant but hey it was a lot of fun

  20. I saw the sub first because that was what played at the imax preview deal, I'm a very excited to see it again with RPat doing his goblin thing.

this was marvelous. an obtuse, bewildering film that somehow sticks the landing. once I grappled with what Miyazaki was conveying with the *other* world, I became emotional at what we were witnessing. Wild that we essentially got an all encompassing Miyazaki film, one that both is a Miyazaki film, about Miyazaki's films AND Miyazaki's life himself. I need to see this like 3 more times to truly get a grasp of everything this film has to offer
