Currently reading Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates and it's so good.

 

Ordered the audiobook for this gem, been meaning to revisit so I'll now start it on my commute. One of my favorites. Love this book.

 

I read that quite awhile ago, @aspeedomodel. Curious, what makes it one of your favorites? I remember liking it, but now that's it a few years down the road, I don't remember all that much about it. Though, I think an audiobook will be interesting considering the way text was used to create the shark shape at times (if I'm recalling the right book).

 

I think it was the time in which I read it for the most part. The book sets itself up as a very interesting, but standard, thriller of sorts and then begins to descend into something else (conceptual shark, un-space, negatives/unchapters, etc.) it just had a profound impact on me at the time. I also love Stephen Hall's writing style. Been meaning to revisit it for some time, because it has sadly been a long while.

 

Just got done listening to The Life We Bury on Audible. Enjoyable book. Going to start The Girl on the Train next.

 

I think I'm in the minority but I didn't enjoy The Girl on the Train as much as I thought I would.

 

Oh yeah? I'm hoping I'll like it. I was pretty intrigued by the description anyway, so we will see!

 

Now reading Boys Among Men by Jonathan Abrams. Really great and recommend it for any NBA fans.

 

Just curious what the thoughts on this would be, but could this forum support individual threads for certain books/authors (outside of say Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire, Stephen King)? It always seemed like we could make any threads for movies/shows (even if they got very few comments), but for books it always seemed to re-direct into this thread.

This is on my mind because if everyone from the book thread transfers over to here from AP, there are quite a few book series we've read/are reading and discussing quite regularly and it might just be easier to create them.

Do you have any thoughts, @Henry, as the Entertainment forum mod? Any idea for rule we should put on this (ie. single books in The Book Thread, but if it's a series go ahead and make a thread, etc)?

 

I'm thinking books that are in series could definitely be condensed into on thread similar to how we have A Song of Fire and Ice or His Dark Materials. I don't have any problem with individual book threads either. I just want to come up with a basic format for titling threads. Probably something like 'Kujo (King, 1978)' similar to the way we do the film threads. If there is a better approach, I'm open to anything.

 

With a book series, I like "Author -- Series" such as "J.K. Rowling - Harry Potter" or "J.R.R. Tolkien - The Lord of the Rings". It's very hard to include year with book series. However, with a singular book, "Amy Poehler - Yes Please (2015)" could work?

Also, since it's a pretty big crossover these days, if a book series also has movies, probably should create a link in each of the OPs with "This thread is to discuss the book/movie. If you would like to discuss the (other format), please see this thread."

 

Actually, looking at how different that would look from the rest of the forum, that's not the best idea. "Harry Potter (J.K. Rowling)" and just drop the year may work best.

 

If the thread is in agreement on that, I'm cool with it. I'm not a big book guy, so I don't know what people look for in that.

On crossovers, I'm more than happy to accommodate. Just give me a head's up and I can edit accordingly.

Currently reading Fellowship of the Ring, as I've never finished the series and decided to start over. Love it, though my interest takes a big dip when Tolkien gives geographical/landscape descriptions.

 

Favorite book series of all time.

 

I had to start reading something for work, but before that had just started wading into the complete Conan Doyle Sherlock Holmes stories. Got as a far as A Scandal in Bohemia. I had never read any proper Sherlock Holmes before, I'm more familiar with the various adaptations, but it's incredible how much of what I enjoy about the character and stories is right there on the page. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Before that I was trying out some other authors for the second or third time. Read King's Different Seasons and loved 3/4 of the stories, Neil Gaiman's American Gods which I enjoyed far more than Anansi Boys (which I had read years ago and hated), and my first Elmore Leonard, Get Shorty, which was fun.

 

I have it, haven't started it. I also just made a goodreads account to keep track of everything.

 

I just started The souls of black folk. I have a few comic books I have to read this weekend.

 

I used to be religious about goodreads but then I kept forgetting to do it.

 

GoodReads is everything. Wanting to get published, agents and editors will look and see if you're reading a lot in your genre, if you're reviewing, etc. I even started a review blog to try and get more interest in my GoodReads. "Building that brand" and all.

 

I don't read nearly enough these days to bother with Goodreads

 

Just finished Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson. May be the best fantasy novel I've read since A Storm of Swords. Wow. Absolutely incredible.

 

I'm about a quarter of the way through The Girl on the Train right now, and it's been pretty weird. I'm still intrigued though, so hopefully it will start to get more interesting soon.

 

I've just gone back to re-read The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss since I'm waiting for a bunch of other fantasy books to come out and I have to say I'm really enjoying. I forgot how much I love Patrick Rothfuss's writing, vivid imagery but he doesn't bog the reader down with too many flowery words.
