Oh wow, how did I miss Stone being left off. That certainly seems like an oversight, especially because they fill a niche of huge micro in a pretty specific, and well loved, way

 

I appreciate what Stone does, but outside of a few beers, a lot of their IPAs taste same-y to me. Not bad at all, I just have trouble differentiating them.

Their Enjoy By series is always fantastic.

 

Lagunitas could have been the token big distro choice as well.

 

Yea, Cycle is decent, but I feel like there are far better breweries in St. Pete (Cage or GreenBench), let alone Florida.

 

I actually agree about their IPAs for the most part, buuuuuut IPAs in general I have that overall feeling. Stone's more experimental stuff is where it's at though, some great weird ones out there

 

Oh wow, yeah, forgot about Stone. I think Bell's -- at least here in Michigan where I can get all of their offerings -- have a bit more variety in what they distribute. But, yeah, Stone is killer and way better than Sierra Nevada. Should be on this list.

 

You paid for Untappd, right? What data can you extract into excel? I've always been interested in that.

 

I usually just throw them $5 for the month randomly when I want to pull the data for something. It's usually just for something I'm curious about like this. The excel file is just the pure raw data of all your checkins. Beer, brewery, rating, date, location, etc etc.

 

Hmmmmmm. I might have to do that. Can I break it up by year? I would love to graph all that shit. Maybe I'll do that in January and look back at each year.

 

Imo Founders smokes the other big ones by a country mile. Tbh Stone does nothing for me except Xocoveza, which was a letdown this year.

 

I think the quality of the beers had nothing to do with Sierra Nevada being on that list but the importance of them in the US beer culture. They basically introduced the US to hops and more or less created the American Pale Ale/IPA. Not to mention them still being family owned and the steps they've taken to reduce their environmental impacts.

 

I'm a Founders stan, since they're the reason I started to get into craft beer.

 

Yeah I wasn't but ringing up Stone because I think they're the best. I was bringing them up because of what they've done for craft beer in general. They've got a presence on the west coast, Virginia and I think their Germany location is open too. All while staying independent

 

You can't pick and choose anything before the export, it just gives you everything, but you'd be able to sort by date and then pick out what you want in excel.

 

But doesn't make them one of the top 25 breweries of today, though. That makes them important in beer history, but that wasn't what the list was, IMO.

I've tried five Treehouse beers now, I'd probably say Julius was my favorite followed by Haze, juiciest beer I can remember having

 

Of the five Tree House beers I've had, I rated them Green (5), Julius and Alter Ego (4.75), Bright (4.5), Single Shot (4)

 

Stone Brewery is my favorite in SD.

 

When factoring in the bigmike beer expert handicap though, Single Shot is a 5 and Green is a 25

I'm not a fan of two of the three midwest picks (haven't had anything by Side Project so I can't comment there). Three Floyds still does some solid stuff (Zombie Dust/Arctic Panzer Wolf/Dreadnaught/Dark Lord will always be faves of mine), but most of their brews have been surpassed by other beers by younger breweries in the Chicago market (Mikerphone, Off Color, Half Acre, etc.). I haven't been a fan of the Toppling Goliath beers I've had either. PseudoSue and Golden Nugget were just meh. It could be a sample size thing because I haven't had KingSue or Mornin' Delight, or it could be a freshness issue. Their beers in the Chicago market are contract brewed in Florida, not Iowa which seems really counter-intuitive.

Also, @cubsml34 and any other Chicago peeps here, we're getting a Ballast Point brewpub in the Fulton Market area apparently. I feel like I should be more excited about it, but meeeeh.

 

That's disappointing to hear if TG's contract stuff isn't making the grade. The stuff that I had out of the original brewery was amazing.

 

It could be a freshness issue as the 4-packs I bought were about over a month old when they finally reached distribution up here, but even then, I just wasn't impressed. I do need to make a trip out to Decorah sometime to try some of their brews at the source tho. That could change my opinion.

 

Eh, I wouldn't think a month would be enough to make a noticeable difference in their style of beers. I really only see that quick of a drop-off in NE IPA type stuff. Could have been a storage/transportation issue though. I'm sure it's harder for them to keep that stuff in check halfway across the country.

 

For people who live in.... Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, San Diego, & Sacramento... have you used Saucey? It's an alcohol delivery app.... which isn't something I actually care about, haha....
