So my aunt came out as non-binary and now I just realized I don’t think I know a gender neutral term for aunt

I'd ask them, I've never really thought about how aunt/uncle/niece/nephew are all so gendered

 

Do you call them Aunt or is it just handy to refer to them like that in conversation? I always wonder cause in media sometimes the nephews/nieces say like Aunt Becky, Uncle Jesse, etc but I don't call any of my uncles Uncle but I'm also not close with them. I just call them by their name like "when is Phillip going to stop mooching off my grandma's credit cards and smoking pot all day in her garage and move tf out."

On a semi related note, my friend has her kids call me Aunt Kiana and it weirds me out cause again I don't call ppl Aunt but especially if they're not actual family but even if they are I don't call them that. The other day I ran into her kids and one asked her "is it okay to hug my aunt?" and it took me like a full minute to realize he meant me and not like... His actual aunt

 

I just call them by their name but I say “aunt”, or at least I did, when mentioning them in conversation (which I usually say as a fun fact that they are younger than me)

 

Oh ok if they were younger than me I'd def call them by Aunt before they came out, to be like "BUT THEYRE YOUNGER." But I've always been amused by aunts and uncles who are younger than the niece or nephew lol. My bff growing up had an aunt who was like five and my lil brain couldn't comprehend it.

 

I called all my aunts and uncles like Aunt Linda and Uncle Reggie etc

My daughter does not call my brother and sister Aunt Callie and Uncle Caleb though
