What Should I Say is definitely going to be played in H&M’s across the world ASAP. I say this as someone who loves this song and shops at h&m

  3. Idk it's not that simple to me. I don't blame those for whom the word might be triggering, regardless of the context. If he wasn't straight, it wouldn't be an issue. That's why I'm interested to know how he'll tackle it if asked about it.

I Think There’s Something You Should Know is like a sister song to Frail State of Mind. So fucking good, damn. This one is growing on me quick.

Well, this was all over the place.

Unfortunately, I found most of this to be a bit grating and a kind of a chore to get through. I feel like there's a pretty good ten song album in here, comprised mostly of that "nighttime music" in the latter half. But even still, while that would be an enjoyable listen, the songs I do like are not packing the punch most of their earlier work did for me.

Glad everyone else seems to be digging it, though. I just don't think band is doing anything for me anymore. Enjoy everyone!

Yeah, that's really what it is important. I don't have a problem with him saying it in that context but I'm not a gay person, so I don't know how it feels to be gay and hear that word casually dropped in a song. I imagine some people could find it distressing, which I completely understand. I also understand Matty using it in the context he did and don't see a problem with it myself, personally.

It's tricky. I'm not gay but I'm definitely not straight, and I've had Very Straight dudes call me that word to my face in an attempt to try and hurt me, and at least in my experience there's a world of difference between that and what Matty is saying in the song.

as a queer person i think the lyrics to "roadkill" are fuckin perfect but that's just me, "queer" isn't a monolith

I’m gay and that line doesn’t bother me at all, but yeah, of course I only speak for myself and can see how it would bother others. I think someone like Matty, who messes with gender stereotypes constantly, making him an easy target for someone who calls people that word, can safely use it in a song in that context.

Can someone explain how, even as a heteronormative person, that line would be problematic? Even as a straight cis male, I still had experiences where someone called me a *** as a derogatory term, so I wouldn’t be able to discuss this? Just looking for perspective

  14. Yeah that's how I see it. About the bolded point, I've been recently seeing more and more conversations about straight artists being ambiguous about their sexuality, playing with that ambiguity and (unintentionally?) profiting off it. I've read LGBTQ+ folks expressing their uncomfortableness, by thinking their identity (through fashion, slang, use of slurs etc.) was being used as an aesthetic. Harry Styles is often cited in those cases too. I guess that's a complicated topic for another thread but I wouldn't mind hearing others' thoughts about it here.

I love how clearly No Rome’s writing comes through on Tonight (I Wish I Was Your Boy). The verses sound straight off one of his EPs.

aren’t we maybe getting a full-length from him this year?

I wonder how they’ll make a setlist when they tour this (however long that is from now). They never ended up playing all of ABI, and that was 7 songs shorter haha

Just finished this. It was fine. Not hugely into it. Will need another listen.

    Sending my love

I think in retrospect the tour cancellation works out well because I feel like when they do get back on the road, they'll start over completely setlist wise instead of just adding new songs into the existing set, which seemed to be the case with the UK tour that started in January this year. They already said they're scrapping the production, so hopefully that means a good amount of Notes songs

Guys is a really nice track. A love song for your friends is something I can get behind fully, and the song sounds wonderful.

This record was awesome, and I'm very happy with it. Some tracks (non-singles) I absolutely love on the first listen: Yeah I Know, Roadkill, Then Because She Goes, Nothing Revealed, Tonight, Shiny Collarbone, and What Should I Say. I love all of the singles as well

Wrapped up my second listen just now.

When the dust settles, I could see myself preferring this to A Brief Inquiry, but I also can't yet imagine it having the impact on me that A Brief Inquiry did when it came out, if that makes sense. That just really was the album for that moment. Though, opening w/ frustration at the state of the world & ending w/ sentimentality certainly is in line w/ my current vibe, lol.

Regardless, these "Music for Cars" albums really are (for me, personally, obviously) a step above what came before overall. I just really love what they're doing right now creatively.
